The Lindenwood men's volleyball team opened its 2015 season on Saturday afternoon at Hyland Arena with a 3-2 victory over Grand View. The Lions won by scores of 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 18-25, and 18-16.
Lindenwood started off strong after it didn't trail at all during the first set, and then scored the final four points in a come-from-behind second set victory. Grand View, the No. 2 team at the NAIA level, did not go away as it won sets three and four.
The fifth set went into overtime as the set had six ties and two lead changes. Lindenwood led for most of the set, but Grand View finally went ahead at 14-13. The Lions killed off two match points before taking the lead back at 16-15. After the two teams traded sideouts, Lindenwood got the win on an attack error by the Vikings.
Colin Hackworth led Lindenwood with 23 kills and he hit .356 for the match. He also had six blocks, five digs, and two service aces.
Jake Duckworth finished with 15 kills, a team-high three service aces, and 19.5 points, while
Kyle Overby had 13 kills and 14.5 points.
Logan Jarus had a team-high seven blocks and was the fourth Lion in double-figure points with 10.5.
In his first match as Lindenwood's setter,
Connor Metcalfe had 56 assists and 10 digs. He also had one of the biggest kills of the match which put Lindenwood up 17-16 in the final set.
Mason Ohta tied Metcalfe with a team-high 10 digs.
Lindenwood continues its homestand next Friday when it welcomes NJIT to Hyland Arena for a 7 p.m. contest.
