The Lindenwood baseball team defeated No. 10 Southern Arkansas in game one by a 6-2 margin, and fell 5-3 in game two.
The Lions were able to start the 2015 season on a high note which began with two runs in the first inning. Newcomer
Wes Degener led off for the Lions with a single up the middle and was able to move to third base on a single by
Nathan Prindle. Illinois State transfer,
Mike Ehrhard drove in Degener and senior
Ryan Light poked a single to left field to bring in Prindle.
Lindenwood would strike again in the third inning that featured a two-RBI double off the bat of Ehrhard to score Prindle and
Michael Bibbs. Ehrhard later scored on a groundout to give the Lions a 5-0 lead after three innings. Light added another RBI to his stat sheet with a double to left center to bring in Ehrhard from first.
Will Spitzfaden tossed seven strong innings for the Lions allowing just one run on four hits and five strikeouts. Spitzfaden had great support from the bullpen to hang on for his first victory of the year in a 6-2 winning effort.
Game two was a complete opposite start as Southern Arkansas took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Lions were able to get one run back in the second off a
Kyle Kruger single but surrendered two more runs in the third. Lindenwood fought back in the fifth inning and pulled within two runs after a two-out two-RBI double down the left field line by
Wade Rothermich to drive in Ehrhard and Bibbs. The Lions were unable to complete the comeback as they fell 5-3 to wrap up the first day of the season.
Lindenwood is now 1-1 on the year and will continue to stay on the road. The Lions will complete their three-game series with Southern Arkansas on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Magnolia, Ark.
