The Lindenwood women's hockey team was down to just five defensemen on Wednesday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena, and it hurt the team in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota State.
Â
The Lady Lions allowed 39 shots in the game and Minnesota State was able to take advantage by tying its highest goal total of the season. Besides being outshot by 12, Lindenwood also struggled on special teams. The Lady Lions were 0-for-three on the power play, while Minnesota State was one-for-two.
Â
The Mavericks led 1-0 after one period, before pulling away in the second. Lindenwood went on the power play at the 4:24 mark of that period and appeared to tie the game, but had the goal waved off due to a high stick. Minnesota State would kill the rest of the power play and then score just 11 seconds after returning to full strength. The Mavericks added another goal just 40 seconds later to go up 3-0.
Â
Lindenwood would get on the board midway through the second period, but couldn't get another shot in the goal. Minnesota State would add to its lead with one goal in the third.
Â
Carrie Atkinson had Lindenwood's goal in the game, with assists from
Lyndsay Kirkham and
Tae Otte. Otte finished with a +1 plus/minus, and Otte and Atkinson both had a team-high three blocks.
Sarah Bobrowski led Lindenwood with six shots on goal.
Â
Lindenwood and Minnesota State will play again on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
