The Lindenwood women's hockey team defeated the No. 10 Northeastern Huskies 4-2 on Saturday afternoon from Boston, Mass.
Starting in net for the Lady Lions was
Jolene deBruyn. Throughout the first period deBruyn was tested early and often, turning away all 19 Huskie shots sent her way. Lindenwood recorded 10 shots of its own during the first period, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Beginning the second period,
Shara Jasper put the Lady Lions ahead 1-0 at the 4:44 mark while on the power play. The goal signified Jasper's third straight game with a point. Assisting on Jasper's goal were
Sarah Bobrowski and
Ally Larson. The Lindenwood lead was short-lived, however, as Northeastern scored on a power play opportunity just minutes later, tying the game 1-1. Both teams headed to the locker rooms even at that score.
Northeastern took the lead, 3-2 just 3:35 into the third period. However, 34 seconds later, Jasper provided the equalizer for the Lady Lions, her second goal of the afternoon, tying the game 2-2. The assists went to
Carrie Atkinson and
Shannon Morris-Reade. With 8:21 remaining in the third-period, Morris-Reade tallied the eventual game-winning goal for the Lady Lions, providing a 3-2 lead.
Tae Otte and Bobrowski had the assists on the goal. For Bobrowski, the assist was her team leading seventh of the season. With 40 seconds remaining in the period, Jasper iced the game with an unassisted goal, her third of the afternoon. Jasper's hat-trick was the first for Lindenwood dating back to February 10th, 2012.
Between the pipes for the Lady Lions, deBryn picked up 38 saves while allowing two goals against, en route to her first career victory. For the game, Lindenwood took 27 shots while Northeastern recorded 40. The Lady Lions went 1-4 on their power play opportunities, and killed off two of the three penalties against them
Coach Spencer spoke after the Lady Lions second-consecutive victory, "I am very proud of our girls this weekend. They battled and competed extremely hard against two good programs on the road. It is nice to come away with two wins, heading into a little bit of a break here. I like the confidence our team is playing with right now, especially with our next two games being within the CHA."
With the victory the Lady Lions move their season record to 2-4-0. With the loss, the Huskies see their record move to 2-1-1. Lindenwood will return to action on Friday, October 30th as they welcome the Penn State Nittany Lions to the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. for their CHA opener.
