The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team knocked off the Penn State Nittany Lions by a score of 5-2 on Friday night from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. The game marked the first CHA conference game of the season for both squads.
The Lady Lions and Nittany Lions spent the opening minutes of the game exchanging opportunities on both ends of the ice. At the 16:36 mark of the period while on the power play, the Nittany Lions broke through as Amy Peterson deflected a Bella Sutton shot into the back of the net, giving Penn State a 1-0 advantage. The Lady Lions would respond with a power play goal of their own at the 15:40 mark of the period, as
Carrie Atkinson registered her first goal of the season.
Tirra Lemoine and
Brooke Peden were credited with the Lady Lion assists on the goal. Both teams headed to the intermission even, 1-1.
The second period saw both teams remain deadlocked at one goal apiece for the opening 13:06. It was at that time, while on the power play, the Nittany Lions took the lead with a goal from Remi Martin. Penn State would carry the one goal edge into the locker rooms, leading 2-1 at the end of the second period.
The Lady Lions came out roaring onto the ice in the third period. Just 3:55 into the period,
Shara Jasper scored the game-tying goal off of a pass from
Shannon Morris-Reade and buried it into the back of the net, for her eighth goal of the season. Shortly after at the 8:49 mark, Jasper tallied her second score of the night, with what would prove to be the game-winning goal and gave the Lady Lions a 3-2 edge. The assists on Jasper's goal went to Morris-Reade and
Tae Otte. Morris-Reade would add a Lindenwood goal 1:58 seconds later, growing the Lady Lion lead to 4-2. Jasper and
Katie Nokelby picked up the assists on Morris-Reade's third goal of the season. Late in the period with the Nittany Lions net empty, Jasper notched her third goal of the game and picked up her second-consecutive hat-trick. In net for the Lady Lions,
Nicole Hensley turned in 33 saves while earning her third victory of the season.
For the game, the Nittany Lions outshot the Lady Lions 35-25. On special teams, Lindenwood was one for three on the power play and killed off four of the six Penn State power plays.
With the win, the Lady Lions improve their season record to 3-4-0 and 1-0-0 within the CHA. In defeat, the Nittany Lions move their season record to 3-6-0 and 0-1-0 in conference play. Lindenwood will return to action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. as they conclude their two game set with Penn State from Lindenwood Ice Arena.
