Box Score The Lindenwood women's hockey team earned their first victory of the season on Friday evening from Durham, N.H., as they defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats 4-2.
New Hampshire wasted little time jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period, as Julia Fedeski scored at the 5:23 mark of the period. The Wildcats would take the one goal advantage into the first period intermission, outshooting the Lady Lions 11-6.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of New Hampshire for the opening 15:23 of the second period. It was at that time, while on the power play that
Shara Jasper drew Lindenwood even, 1-1.
Sarah Bobrowski and
Shannon Morris-Reade were credited with the assists on the game-tying goal. Just over three minutes later,
Emily Gunderson put the Lady Lions ahead, 2-1. For Gunderson, the goal was the first of her career at Lindenwood, with the helpers going to Jasper and
Tae Otte. For good measure, the Lady Lions added another goal to their lead with 43 seconds remaining in the period, growing their lead to 3-1. This time it was
Carla Goodwin who registered her first-career goal. Assisting on Goodwin's goal were Jasper and Bobrowski.
New Hampshire struck early in the final period, cutting the Lindenwood lead by a goal, 3-2. After protecting the one-goal lead for much of the period, Jasper tallied her second goal of the night with 5:03 remaining, expanding the Lady Lion lead to the eventual final of 4-2.
Between the pipes for the Lady Lions,
Nicole Hensley picked up 36 saves while allowing two goals against. For the game, Lindenwood took 22 shots while New Hampshire tallied 38. The Lady Lions were successful on their only power play opportunity, and the Wildcats went 1-3 on the advantage.
After the game, Coach Spencer praised the effort of his team, "We got better as the game went on, showing some good resiliency to come back after giving up an early power play goal. We got great goaltending, timely scoring and showed guts and heart in the final two minutes when it was six on four. I am really proud of our group tonight and I am looking forward to taking on Northeastern tomorrow."
The Lady Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon from Boston, Mass. as they wrap up their Northeast road trip with a non-conference clash vs. the Northeastern Huskies at 1 p.m.
