The Lindenwood men's soccer team shutout the Southwest Baptist Bearcats, 2-0 on Friday night from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
Lindenwood wasted little time jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, scoring just 54 seconds into the contest. The goal, which would prove to be the game-winning tally was scored by
Andre Hayne, his team-leading fifth of the season.
Steven Hutchison was credited with the assist. The Lions would cling to the one goal lead into the 31st minute of the match when they would receive an insurance goal from
Jose Sanchez. For Sanchez, the goal was his second of the season and came off of a cross pass from
Jose Del Val. Lindenwood headed into halftime with the two goal lead. The majority of the second-half play was controlled by the Lions, who outshot the Bearcats 10-2 during the half. Southwest Baptist was unable to breakthrough for a score of their own and the game ended with a final score of 2-0. In goal for the Lions,
Andrew Hamerlinck registered two saves while recording his third shutout of the season.
In the end, the Lions had the advantage in shots ((22-4), shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (6-4). The Bearcats led in the saves category (3-2).
With the win, the Lions improve their season record to 7-5-2 and 3-1-1 within the MIAA. In defeat, Southwest Baptist moves their record to 0-13-0 and 0-5-0 in conference play. Lindenwood will return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. when they host the No. 15 ranked Northeastern State Riverhawks from Hunter Stadium.
