The Lindenwood men's soccer team defeated the No. 12 ranked Upper Iowa Peacocks, 1-0 in an MIAA showdown on Saturday afternoon from Fayette, Iowa.
Throughout the first-half, defense was on display as neither the Lions or Peacocks were able to breakthrough with a score. During the half, the Lions took seven corner kicks and sent three shots on goal. The Peacocks did not receive any corner kicks, and sent five shots towards the Lindenwood net. Both teams headed into the half tied, 0-0.
The Lions offensive efforts paid off at the 59:25 mark of the second-half, when
Stefan Andric took a cross pass from
Eduardo Spragge Campo inside the box and buried into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the third of the season for Andric, and his second in as many games. For the remainder of the half, Lindenwood continued their fine defensive play, preserving the 1-0 lead until the final whistle of the match. In net for the Lions,
Andrew Hamerlinck turned in five saves for his second shutout of the season, and the seventh of his career.
In the end, Lindenwood held the edge in corner kicks (8-3) and saves (5-3) while Upper Iowa had the advantage in shots (15-8) and shots on goal (5-4). Both teams ended the match with an even nine shots on goal.
With the victory, the Lions improve their season record to 5-3-1, and 2-1-0 in MIAA play. Lindenwood will next be in action on Wednesday afternoon when they visit the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks from Oakland City, Ind. at 2 p.m. for a non-conference matchup.
