The Lindenwood women's soccer team got out of the loss column after forcing a 1-1 tie at Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday afternoon.
Looking for their first conference win of the season, the Lady Lions entered Nebraska-Kearney on a five match losing streak. The Lady Lopers gained control of the contest early, getting two shots and a corner kick in the first five minutes. Exchanging fouls, Kearney kept trying to break through maneuvering around the defense to launch three more shots and attempt another corner the next 30 minutes. After leading the defense and making several good saves, Lindenwood goalkeeper
Jordan Gnolfo let one through in the 42nd minute when Kearney's Nicole Potthoff found the foot of Kelsi Ienn who drilled it in from the far left side of the box.
Lindenwood tried to kill Kearney's momentum early in the second-half putting its foot on the gas pedal. Firing three shots and getting two corner opportunities in the first 12 minutes resulted in no scoring for the Lady Lions. Defense holding steady the entire half limiting the Lady Lopers' chances, Lindenwood took advantage of a foul called on Kearney to compose itself.
Kat Roe passed the ball into the box, and Kearney goalkeeper Ali Hirschman came out to kick the ball away. However,
Alexis Robbers had other plans as she snuck the ball past the keeper to tie the match at one goal a piece with just eight minutes left to play.
Both teams had one more opportunity to put a ball in the back of the net, but each failed and they headed to overtime. Lindenwood was entering its fifth overtime match of the season.
The Lady Lions controlled most of the first overtime period, getting off three shots, the final one being with one minute remaining that came in the box, but Hirschman turned away. The second overtime saw both teams attempt to get an opportunity, but neither team could as no shots were recorded. Lindenwood and Kearney traded fouls, but time expired to end the match in a 1-1 tie.
Seven of the 10 matches Lindenwood has played this season have resulted in a tie or one-goal final. The Lady Lions move to 1-6-3 overall, and avoided the loss column for the first time in MIAA play to go to 0-3-1. Lindenwood continues its road trip Thursday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
