The Lindenwood Lady Lions fell to the Mercyhurst Lakers 3-2 on Friday evening in a CHA conference showdown from Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.
The Lakers wasted little time gaining the early advantage on their home ice, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead just 4:10 into the opening period. The Mercyhurst goal was scored by Samantha Fiesler, her first goal of the season. The Lakers would carry the one goal edge into the first period intermission.Beginning the second period, Lindenwood would pull even at the 5:39 mark, as Sarah Bobrowski notched the game-tying goal off of a pass from Tae Otte. The game remained 1-1 for just under eight minutes, when Britannia Gillanders put the Lady Lions ahead with her fifth goal of the season. Assisting on the Gillanders score were Kaitlyn Davidson and Otte. The Lindenwood lead was short lived, however, as Fiesler tallied her second goal of the evening 2:27 later, drawing the Lakers even heading to the second period intermission. Mercyhurst struck early in the third period as Megan Whiddon scored just 24 seconds into the frame. For Whiddon and the Lakers the goal proved to be the game-winning goal, as they withstood the Lady Lion pressure late in the period. In goal for Lindenwood, Nicole Hensley made 31 saves while allowing the three goals against. The Lady Lions penalty kill remained hot, killing off both penalties against, extending its consecutive kill streak to 10. However, the Lindenwood power play failed to capitalize on any of its three attempts. For the game, Mercyhurst outshot the Lady Lions 34-15. Shannon Morris-Reade paced the team with three shots on goal.With the loss the Lady Lions move to 3-6-2 on the season and 1-2-2 within the CHA. Following their victory, Mecyhurst improves to 4-5-2, and 4-0-1 in conference play. The Lady Lions return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. from Mercyhurst Ice Center.
