The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the No. 1 ranked Wisconsin Badgers 5-1 on Friday afternoon at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wis.
The Badgers wasted little time jumping out to a one-goal lead, as Sophia Shaver opened the scoring just 1:22 into the game. For the periods' entirety, the ice tilted heavily in favor of Wisconsin, as the Lady Lions were outshot 28-3 and headed into the locker room down 1-0.
Wisconsin would grow its lead to 3-0, following a pair of scores just 46 seconds apart. The goal scorers for the Badgers were Molly Donner and Emily Clark. Lindenwood answered back with a goal of its own as
Rachel Weich beat Wisconsin's goalie, Ann-Renee Desbiens, with 2:38 remaining in the second period. For Weich, the goal was her second of the season, and the assist was credited to
Sarah Bobrowski, her team-leading ninth helper of the season. Before the end of the period, Wisconsin would light the lamp once more, behind Clark's second goal of the period, and entered the second-period intermission up 4-1.
After playing even for the opening 14:06 of the third period, Wisconsin boosted its lead to 5-1 following a Rachel Jones power play score. Jones' score was the final goal of the afternoon, as the game ended 5-1 in favor of the Badgers. In goal for the Lady Lions,
Nicole Hensley performed admirably, turning in a season-high 45 saves despite allowing five goals against.
For the game, the Badgers held the edge in shots 50-12. On special teams, Lindenwood completed the game 0-1 on the power play, while the Lady Lion penalty-kill was 3-4. The Badgers narrowly held the edge in the faceoff circle, winning 29 draws to the Lady Lions' 28.
With the loss, the Lady Lions move their season record to 3-8-2. Following their victory, the Badgers improved their season record to 13-0-0. Lindenwood and Wisconsin will return to the LaBahn Arena ice on Sunday at 2 p.m. conclude their two-game series.
