Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

St. Cloud State Outlasts Lady Lions, 2-0

The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the visiting St. Cloud State Huskies by a score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

A quick first period did see some action. The Lady Lions forced a tripping minor at the 6:59 mark. However, Lindenwood was unable to put a shot on goal. With less than five minutes remaining in the first, Lindenwood held the edge in shots on goal, 4-3. A hooking penalty by the Lady Lions gave St. Cloud State a power play, but goalkeeper Nicole Hensley knocked away a pair of shots to kill off the team's 17th penalty in the last 19 seconds. Lindenwood's Shara Jasper and Carrie Atkinson both got off a shot before the buzzer sounded, but St. Cloud State net minder Katie Fitzgerald corralled them in to keep the score at 0-0 heading into intermission.

The Huskies came out firing early on in the second period getting off 10 shots in the first six minutes, but only a couple got past the defense to Hensley. At the 6:28 mark in the period, St. Cloud State finally got one past the Lindenwood goalie to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead early on. Lindenwood and the visitors exchanged chances the rest of the period, both getting another five shots on net, but neither failed to execute. At the second intermission, St. Cloud State led the Lady Lions, 1-0.

Coming out for the third period, Lindenwood controlled most of the opportunities, but found itself in the penalty box a couple times. Drawing two penalties in the first five minutes, the Lady Lions' defense stood strong and killed off both penalties to bring their total of 19 kills in the last 21 power plays. The Lindenwood offense went on the attack soon after, even drawing a penalty to get the man advantage. St. Cloud State killed it off with the Lady Lions getting shots on goal by Jasper and Shannon Morris-Reade, but neither could sneak it past Fitzgerald. Forced to pull Hensley with 1:26 remaining, the Huskies knocked one in to seal the win by a score of 2-0.

Lindenwood outshot St. Cloud State 21-18, only the second time the Lady Lions have put more pucks on net than their opponents. Inside the faceoff circle, the visitors edged out Lindenwood 26-24. Jasper led the Lady Lions with seven shots, and Sarah Bobrowski had four. Hensley made 16 saves with only the one goal against.

With the loss, Lindenwood falls to 3-10-2. St. Cloud State improves to 8-7. The two teams square off again Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. in game two of the weekend set.
