Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Third Period Goal Not Enough as Women's Hockey Drops Weekend Finale to St. Cloud State, 3-2

The Lindenwood women's hockey dropped the second game of the weekend set, 3-2 vs. St. Cloud State on Sunday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

St. Cloud State used momentum gained from last night's win to give itself the early advantage on the scoreboard. Just 3:39 into the opening period, Brittney Anderson gave the Huskies the lead with a point-blank wrist shot just past the glove of Lindenwood goalie Nicole Hensley. Just 1:21 later, however, Tirra Lemoine scored her first goal of the season stuffing past Katie Fitzgerald of St. Cloud State with assists coming from Rachel Weich and Corbin Welsh. Both teams were at a stalemate the rest of the period, with each getting a couple opportunities in the final seconds of the period, but at the intermission the score stood at 1-1.

Just like the first period, the Huskies put a puck in the back of the net early in the second frame. Molly Illikainen won the faceoff, then proceeded to whip a backhand past Hensley for her team-leading 11th goal of the season to give her team the lead 2-1 just 53 seconds into the period. Both teams received a power play, with Lindenwood on the penalty kill after a Shannon Morris-Reade checking minor. The Lady Lions killed off their 20th penalty in their last 22 chances, and two and a half minutes later they went on a power play of their own because of a St. Cloud State interference penalty. Lindenwood outshot the Huskies 12-9 in the period, but were unable to tie the game before the second intermission horn sounded.

Heading into the third period down 2-1, the Lady Lions came out of the locker room strong. On an attack began by Sarah Bobrowski, Morris-Reade tied the game at two apiece for her fifth goal of the season and Bobrowski's team-leading 10th helper. Lemoine was called for high sticking just a minute and a half later to put Lindenwood on the penalty kill again. The Lady Lions killed it, with Hensley turning away all shots that got through the defense. Having few opportunities the rest of the period, Carla Goodwin was whistled for a checking minor to send the home team down a man with less four minutes remaining. Once Lindenwood successfully killed the penalty, Hensley was pulled to give the Lady Lions a one-skater advantage. Trying to knock one in late, Fitzgerald stood strong in net to keep the score at 3-2 for the final.

Hensley turned in 24 saves, and Lindenwood killed all three penalties running up the total to 22 of the last 24 chances. Lemoine recorded her first point and goal of her collegiate career after the first period goal, while Morris-Reade's third period tally gave her a season total of 12th point. Carrie Atkinson had three blocked shots in the game, while line mate and team captain Tae Otte posted two. Shara Jasper and Morris-Reade each had five shots on goal, and Welsh had three.

Losing the second game of the weekend, the Lady Lions fall to 3-11-2, while St. Cloud State improves to 9-7. Lindenwood returns to the ice Friday, December 4th and Saturday, December 5th for a road trip to Rochester, N.Y. to look to get back in the win column against Rochester Institute of Technology. Both games have a 2 p.m. local, 1 p.m. central time, drop of the puck for a CHA weekend showdown.
