Women’s Hockey Returns to the Win Column, Defeats RIT 4-1

The Lindenwood women's hockey team defeated the RIT Tigers 4-1 on Friday afternoon in a CHA conference matchup from the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y. The victory snapped a nine-game winless streak for the Lady Lions.
 
The first period of play was controlled by RIT, as the Tigers grabbed the early 1-0 advantage at the 1:44 mark of the period. Jess Paton was credited with the score, while Carly Payerl picked up the assist. The first period was plagued by a series of penalties, as both teams were called for four penalties each. RIT headed into the first period intermission with a 1-0 lead, outshooting Lindenwood 17-2.
 
The Lady Lions began the second period on the attack, finding more success sending pucks towards the RIT net then they had during the previous period. Just past the halfway point of the period at 10:13, Sarah Bobrowski drew the Lady Lions even at 1-1, scoring off of a wrist shot from the left side faceoff circle. For Bobrowski, the goal was her third of the season. Katie Nokelby and Shannon Morris-Reade were credited with the assists, their fifth and eighth helpers of the season, respectively. Lindenwood would light the lamp once more before the periods end, scoring while on the power play with 4:23 remaining. Shara Jasper notched the goal for the Lady Lions, her team-leading 12th tally of the season. Assisting on the play were Britannia Gillanders and Morris-Reade.  For Gillanders, the assist was her first of the season, while Morris-Reade's second helper of the game brought her season-total to nine. Jasper's score marked the first power play goal scored by the Lady Lions since Oct. 30 vs. Penn State. Lindenwood would close out the remainder of the period leading by a score of 2-1.
 
Lindenwood and RIT skated even for the opening 12:25 of the third period, with neither team finding many scoring chances. However, Carrie Atkinson ripped a shot into the back of the RIT net, growing the Lady Lion to 3-1. For Atkinson, the goal was her second score of the season, while the assists were credited to Tae Otte and Holly Dietzler. For Otte, the assist was her sixth of the season, while Dietzler picked up her first-point of the season.  Late in the period, with the RIT net vacant, Carla Goodwin iced the game away, sending the puck into the empty net from near center-ice. Goodwin's second goal of the season brought the game to its eventual final of 4-1.
 
Between the pipes for Lindenwood, Nicole Hensley turned in a 33 save performance, allowing just the first period goal against. The victory was the Hensley's third of the season. Tirra Lemoine led the way for the Lady Lions in the shots category, sending five pucks on net. For the game, the Tigers held the advantage in shots 34-32. On special teams, the Lady Lion power play was 1-7, while their penalty-kill successfully killed off all six penalties against.
 
 
With the win the Lady Lions improved their season record to 4-11-2 and 2-3-2 within the CHA. Following the loss the Tigers move their season record to 4-15-0 and 0-7-0 in conference play. The two teams will return to the Gene Polisseni Center ice to do battle once again, tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
