Women’s Hockey Rallies Late, Forces Tie vs. Syracuse

The Lady Lions hockey team and the Syracuse Orange played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

Lindenwood and Syracuse began play slowly, with both teams failing to register a shot on goal for the opening six minutes of the period. Shortly after at the 7:36 mark of the period, Syracuse's Stephanie Grossi put the Orange ahead off of a rebound opportunity in front of the Lady Lion net. Nicole Ferrara and Melissa Piacentini picked up the assists on the goal, which gave the Orange a 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period.

The second period saw the majority of action played within the Lindenwood defensive zone. With 14:56 remaining in the period, Rachel Weich was called for a tripping minor leaving the Lady Lions shorthanded. Just 40 seconds into Weich's penalty, Britannia Gillanders was sent off for a tripping minor of her own putting the Orange on a five-on-three power play. Lindenwood received a boost from its penalty kill unit as it successfully killed off both penalties, holding the score at 1-0 for the remainder of the penalties and period.

Despite increasing the pressure put forth during the third period, the Lady Lions were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Nicole Hensley sparkled between the pipes for Lindenwood throughout the game, and especially during the third period, which saw her make several crucial saves. Hensley's work in goal ignited the Lady Lion offense and with 2:21 remaining in the game, Shannon Morris-Reade notched the game-tying goal, her fourth score of the season. Linemate Shara Jasper registered the assist on the goal, her sixth helper of the season and team-leading 16th point. The late score sent the two teams to overtime knotted at one goal each.

Lindenwood began the overtime period shorthanded for the opening 1:19, following a Jasper checking minor with 41 seconds remaining in the third period. The penalty kill unit continued its strong effort by successfully killing off the penalty. Both teams sent three shots on goal during the five-minute overtime, however, none found the back of the net and the game ended tied 1-1.

In the end, the Orange outshot the Lady Lions 40-21. Individually, Lindenwood was led in shots by five skaters, who each tallied three shots apiece.  The Lady Lions special teams were highlighted by their penalty kill unit who went 3-3, while the power play unit was 0-1.

With the tie the Lady Lions move their season record to 3-5-2 and 1-1-2 within the CHA. Following the tie, the Orange see their season record move to 5-5-1 and 3-1-1 in conference play. Lindenwood will return to action on Friday evening at 6 p.m. ET as they travel to Erie, Pa. to take on the Mercyhurst Lakers for a CHA showdown.
