The Lindenwood women's hockey team dropped its final game of the 2015 calendar year to the Robert Morris Colonials, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
After Saturday afternoons overtime tie, each team appeared to get off to a slow start during the first period on Sunday. Neither team was able to breakthrough with a goal over the opening 20 minutes, as the teams headed into the first period intermission tied 0-0. Robert Morris outshot Lindenwood 10-6 for the period, with neither team being whistled for a penalty.
Beginning the second period the Lady Lions would strike early with the first goal of the game, coming just 58 seconds into the period.
Britannia Gillanders tallied her sixth goal of the season off of a re-deflected shot from
Ally Larson. For Larson it was her sixth assist of the season, also receiving an assist on the play was
Katie Nokelby, her sixth helper of the season. The Lindenwood lead did not hold up for long, as Robert Morris lit the lamp twice in a 67-second span to take a 2-1 lead. Scoring for the Colonials were Mikaela Lowater at the 2:58 mark of the period while on the power play, and Sarah Quaranta at 4:07. Robert Morris would carry the 2-1 edge through the end of the period.
During the third period while on the power play, the Lady Lions allowed their first short-handed goal of the season at the 6:57 mark. The Colonials short-handed goal was scored by Lowater, her second-goal of the game, growing the lead to 3-1. Robert Morris would strike once more before the end of the period as Brittany Howard cashed in an empty-net goal, bringing the score to its eventual final of 4-1.
In goal for Lindenwood,
Nicole Hensley turned in a 29 save performance while allowing the three goals against. Gillanders led the Lady Lions in shots with five, and was followed up by four shots from
Sarah Bobrowski.
Shannon Morris-Reade performed well in the faceoff circle, winning 11 of her 22 draws. For the game the Colonials held the edge in shots 33-28. On special teams Lindenwood was 0-2 on the power play and successfully killed off two of three penalties against.
With the loss, the Lady Lions move their season record to 4-12-4 and 2-4-4 within the CHA. Following the victory, Robert Morris improves to 10-6-4 on the season and 4-3-3 in conference play. Lindenwood will enjoy a 19-day break between games, and will next take the ice on January 3 in Mankato, Minn. as they visit WCHA opponent, the Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks.
