After finishing the regular season with two losses against Robert Morris (Ill.), the Lions faced that same Eagles team Saturday afternoon in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) Playoffs and came away with a 2-1 overtime victory.
All of the scoring in regulation came within a five minute span in the first period. Lindenwood tickled the twine first on the power play when Rock Einersen and Graham Zagrodney set up Mike Lozano with 9:05 remaining. Robert Morris countered at the 14:19 mark and the game was tied at one, and stayed that way through the end of the third period.
With the playoff nature of the contest, a full 20 minute sudden death overtime period began. Neither team found the game-winner in the first 10 minutes, but a key penalty on the Eagles proved to be the difference. With 8:31 left, Tobias Nasgarde and Zagrodney found Lozano for his second power play goal of the game and the Lions were able to celebrate.
Special teams once again emerged as a major factor as Lindenwood scored twice on five, man-advantage opportunities while holding Robert Morris scoreless on four chances. In an evenly matched contest, the Lions held a slight 35-32 shot advantage, and Michael Hails stopped all but one of those 32 shots to earn the win between the pipes.
Lindenwood now faces top seeded Ohio in the CSCHL Championship game Sunday morning. The Bobcats outlasted Illinois 5-3 on Saturday to advance. The puck drops at 10:30 a.m. in Urbana-Champaign, Ill.
