The Lindenwood baseball team fell to No. 13 St. Edward's by scores of 8-6 and 7-6 respectively on Saturday afternoon in Austin, Texas.
The Lions opened up game one with two runs in the first.Â
Michael Bibbs scored from first base on a fielding error by the centerfielder and
Mike Ehrhard crossed the plate on a two-out single by
Ryan Light. St. Edward's worked its way back to tie the game in the bottom of the second before Lindenwood regained the lead in the top of the third inning with one run. Again, the Hilltoppers responded with a run of their own to tie the ballgame at 3-3.
The Lindenwood bats remained loud in the fourth inning and it began with a
Zac Perkins single up the middle. Perkins scored from second on a bunt single by
Wes Degener that included a throwing error allowing Degener to move up to third base.Â
Nathan Prindle opened the game up with a two-run blast to right center to put the Lions up 6-3 in the top of the fourth.
St. Edward's continued its ways of answering the Lindenwood runs and in the bottom of the fourth they took the lead. The Hilltoppers scored five runs on five hits, three of which were extra-base-hits, and one fielding error. The Lions could not bounce back from the two runs deficit and fell 8-6 in game one.
Lindenwood took out its frustration from game one and came out with five runs in the first three innings. The scoring started in the first with one run off the bat of Bibbs to bring in Prindle. The second inning started with a Light single to third base and a
Wade Rothermich single to center that put both runners in scoring position after a throwing error.Â
Shawn Hagarty and Perkins each laid down a bunt to score Light and Rothermich respectively to add on two more runs.  Degener followed with a single down the right field line to drive in Hagarty. Ehrhard led off the third inning with a solo shot over the centerfield wall to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
The Lions added another run in the top of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead and all seemed to be in favor of the visiting Lions, but the Hilltoppers persisted yet again. St. Edward's scored four runs in the sixth, one in the seventh, and the game-tying run in the ninth to send game two into extra frames.
Without a run scored since the fifth inning, the Lions were looking to get just one run in any way they could. Light singled with one out and moved to second after Rothermich was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved into scoring position after a throwing error by the pitcher and St. Edward's walked the pinch-hitter
Kyle Kruger to load the bases with one out. The Hilltoppers were able to get the second out without surrendering a run and found their final out on a wild pitch that triggered Light to head towards the plate, causing a bang-bang at the plate resulting in no runs for the Lions.
The first batter in the bottom of the 10
th inning for the Hilltoppers belted the ball over the left center wall for a walk-off home run for St. Edward's. The Lions dropped their fourth game in a row and their second extra-inning game this year.
After two tough games, Lindenwood falls to 1-4 on the year. Â The Lions will complete the four-game series with St. Edward's on Sunday with the first of two games begining at noon.
