Baseball Splits with No. 13 St. Edward's

The Lindenwood baseball team split with St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon by winning game one 10-9, but fell in game two by a score of 11-8.

Game one started off rough for the Lions as they fell behind 6-1 in the first three innings in the seven-inning game.  The only Lindenwood run scored was a sacrifice fly by Mike Wilson that scored Wade Rothermich.  Lindenwood looked to have a big inning and they found it in the top of the fourth. Mike Ehrhard, who had five RBI on the weekend, started the inning with a single to left field and moved to second base on a Ryan Light single.  Rothermich was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Drew Quinones.  A double by Quinones drove in Ehrhard and Light to bring the Lions within three runs and force a St. Edward's pitching change.

Wilson kept the ball rolling with a single to the left side of the infield to score Rothermich.  Paul Sherwood reached on a fielder's choice that left all runners safe including Quinones crossing the plate and Wes Degener followed up with a sacrifice bunt that resulted in a fielder's choice to load the bases.  Nathan Prindle, who led the team with six RBI on the weekend, reached base on an error by the third baseman allowing Wilson to score and tie the game.  With bases loaded and still no one out Michael Bibbs hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Sherwood and Ehrhard followed up with a sacrifice of his own to score Degener.  The Lions posted seven runs on four hits and took an 8-6 lead.

Lindenwood scored another run in the fifth on a Degener triple to right center that scored Sherwood.  St. Edward's cancelled the run in the bottom of the inning and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on one hit and two costly errors.  The Lions found themselves in familiar territory with a tie game in the late innings and would look to create a positive outcome.

After two quick outs the Lions created some offense as Sherwood and Degener drew back-to-back walks.  Prindle came through in the clutch with a single to score Sherwood and give the Lions a 10-9 lead.  Connor Law was able to hold the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the inning and earned his first career win as a Lion.

Game two started in similar fashion with the Lions falling behind early and surrendered five runs in the first three innings.  The Lions tried to climb back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning off the bat of Prindle to pull within three.  St. Edward's answered back immediately with four runs in the bottom half of the frame and added another run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.

Again Lindenwood generated a big inning and this time it was in the eighth inning.  With one out and runners at the corners, Ehrhard singled through the left side to bring in Prindle and move Branded Sugar to second.  Sherwood singled to load the bases and bring up the pinch hitter Rayce Singbush.  Singbush singled to right center to score Sugar and the bases remained loaded.  Quinones earned an RBI the hard way after being hit by a pitch and again the Lions had based juiced.  Zac Perkins hammered a double down the left field line to drive in Singbush and Sherwood as Quinones moved to third.  Wilson added one more run with a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Quinones to score.

Lindenwood scored six runs on five hits to pull within two runs, but St. Edwards added another run in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to three run.  The Lions could not pull off the comeback and fell 11-8 in the second game.  Perkins was five-for-10 on the weekend with two doubles and three RBI while Degener was seven-for-16 with a triple and two RBI in the four-game series.

Lindenwood moves to 2-5 on the year.  The Lions will travel to Montevallo, Ala. to compete in the three-game, 2015 Montevallo Baseball Classic.  Lindenwood will open up with the University of Montevallo on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
