After letting one get away Friday night against Illinois in a shootout, men's ice hockey took care of business Saturday night with a 4-2 victory over the Illini in Urbana-Champaign, Ill.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first period on an Illinois power play, the Lions rebounded in the opening minutes of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Stephen Bopp took matters into his own hands when he scored on an unassisted play at the 23 second mark. Only 44 ticks of the clock later, Rock Einersen and Jake Fairchild set up Mike Lozano for a power play goal, but the Illini would take advantage of their own man-up chance to tie the game later in the frame. Lindenwood slowly pulled away in the third, starting with an even strength score from senior Peppi Sipila with 11:50 remaining, assisted by Graham Zagrodney and Kevin Walters. The Lions added some insurance later when Tobias Nasgarde found the back of the net with help from Rumble with 8:15 left in regulation.
Lindenwood was outshot by Illinois 27-23, but Michael Hails stopped 25 of those 27 shots to earn the victory between the pipes.
The Lions improved to 14-12-2 overall and 9-4-1 in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League. They'll wrap up regular season and conference play with a two-game set against Robert Morris (Ill.) February 13-14. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday night on the road in Bensenville, Ill.
