Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Has Large Comeback In California Baptist Win

The Lindenwood men's volleyball team ended its California road trip with a huge come-from-behind win over rival California Baptist. The Lions won by scores of 23-25, 17-25, 33-31, 25-19, and 15-13.

The match appeared to be over in three sets after Lindenwood lost the first two sets and trailed 24-21 in the third game. A service error got the Lions within two, and Colin Hackworth recorded two straight service aces to help Lindenwood kill off the first three match points it faced. The set went back-and-forth after that with the Lions killing off three more match points. Finally, Lindenwood scored three straight points to win the set, with the final point coming off a service ace from Jake Duckworth.

Lindenwood used a 6-1 run in the fourth set to go up 17-12, and it recorded sideouts in all but one of California Baptist's remaining serves in the set to force a deciding fifth game.

The early part of the fifth set was tight, with four ties and one lead change. With the score tied at 6-6, Hackworth recorded a kill and a service ace which put Lindenwood ahead for good. It still took Lindenwood four match points before finally putting the Spartans away. With the score 14-13, the Lions had to send a free ball over the net. On California Baptist's attack, Thomas Cruz and Hackworth blocked it, giving the Lions the win.

California Baptist had eight more kills, but the Lions recorded five more service aces and two more blocks. Both teams hit just over .200 in the non-conference showdown between the top two programs in the NAIA in the 2000s.

Lindenwood received balanced offense, led by Hackworth with 15 kills. Kyle Overby added 12 kills, and Duckworth and Logan Jarus each had nine kills. Jarus hit .400 for the match and Overby had a .320 hitting percentage. Roman Seghezzi had 23 assists, and Connor Metcalfe recorded 16 assists. Duckworth had a team-high four aces, one more than Hackworth.

Defensively, Overby and Ryan Vorderer each had six digs. Cruz had double-figure blocks with, and Hackworth finished with six blocks. Hackworth had a team-high 21 points, and Duckworth, Jarus, and Overby were all in double-figure points.

Lindenwood improves to 7-7 on the year. The Lions return to MIVA play next weekend when they host Ball State and IPFW at Hyland Arena.
