Day 2 RecapLindenwood's wrestling team looked to build off of a solid day one at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Mo., that saw only one of the four wrestlers they took to nationals get eliminated.
Kyle Webb,
Derrick Weller, and
Terrel Wilbourn did just that, cementing their status as All-Americans. Webb would place eighth, Weller would place fifth, while Wilbourn would make it to the national championship, where he would lose a close match to finish second. The team would score 30 points, good enough to place 13th overall.
The No. 3
Terrel Wilbourn needed one victory to make it to the national championship after winning both of his matches yesterday. Wilbourn got that in his match against No. 6 Destin McCauley, a conference opponent from Nebraska-Kearney. Wilbourn won a close match 7-6. Wilbourn was 3-0 up to that point, hoping to carry the momentum into the finals. Wilbourn matched with another conference opponent No.1 Central Missouri's Frank Cagnina for the final. Wilbourn battled, but fell to the top ranked Cagnina 5-2.
The No. 7 Weller came into day two after going 2-1 yesterday in some hard fought matches. Weller started the day off against No. 8 Greg Hegarty from the hosting school, Maryville. Weller won this match convincingly, winning 8-3. Weller then faced the eventual third place finisher and No. 1 ranked Clint Poster of St. Cloud State. Weller couldn't pull out the victory, putting him in the fifth place match. Weller wrestled the No. 4 Francis Mizia of Mercyhurst University, where Weller gutted out an SV-1 8-6 victory, giving him a fifth place finish. Weller finished eighth last year, but improved his senior year. Weller wrapped up a tremendous career at Lindenwood. Weller's senior season saw him go 35-24.
The No. 3 Webb started out day two in the same position Weller did with two wins and a loss on day one. Webb went into his first match of the day against the eventual third place finisher and No. 2 ranked Maurice Miller of Notre Dame of Ohio, but fell in a 10-3 decision. The loss put Webb in the seventh and eighth place match against the No. 4 ranked Darren Wynn from McKendree, where Webb lost his second match of the day. This was the senior Webb's last match for Lindenwood. Webb has had a great career at Lindenwood and concluded his career with an astonishing record of 34-15 during his senior year.
Lindenwood's team score was 30; which was good enough for 13th place, just two points behind Central Missouri and North Carolina-Pembroke. The Lions were just four points out of cracking the top ten. Lindenwood finished third out of all of the MIAA teams competing.
The end of the National Championships means that Lindenwood's wrestling program will be done for the 2015 season. The graduating class was special and will be missed greatly at Lindenwood, not only on the mats, but around campus and the community as well.
Day 1 RecapLindenwood took four wrestlers into nationals and Lindenwood will go into day two with three of the four wrestlers still alive.
Terrel Wilbournled the team with two wins without a single loss, putting him in position to wrestle in the semifinals.
Kyle Webb and
Derrick Weller won two and lost one.
John McArdle is the only Lindenwood wrestler to lose twice, but also had a win.
The No. 3 ranked Webb started out the day strong for Lindenwood, by defeating his opponent Pat Owens of Seton Hill University, 10-8. Webb then fell in his second match to Michael Screptock of Tiffin University, but rebounded strongly by defeating his next opponent Ryan Skonieczny of Findlay University in a close 6-5 match. No. 3 ranked Wilbourn started out well, getting his first victory 7-3 over Brent Fickel of Ashland University, following that with an 8-4 victory in his second round match against the No. 7 Jeremy Landowski from Mercyhurst University.
In the 157 weight class, the No. 7 Weller won his first match against conference opponent Bradley Little of Fort Hays State 4-1 before losing a close match 3-1 in the second round to last year's national champion Jon Rivera of Notre Dame University of Ohio. Weller bounced back strongly with a 6-3 victory over McKendree University's Josh Ballard. The No. 8 McArdle lost his opening match to No. 5 Jacob Waste from California Baptist, but recovered with a 13-4 major victory over Ashland's Kurt Schaefer. McArdle couldn't quite pull off a win in the next match against Limestone's Caleb Rivera.
The three wrestlers still wrestling will earn All-American accolades, Webb, Wilbourn, and Weller all earned All-American honors last year too. All three hope to improve on their placements last year with Webb and Weller placing 8th, while Wilbourn finished 3rd. Lindenwood is currently 11th in the team standings out of the 45 teams participating, with 18.5 points. Lindenwood is tied with Augustana College, but trailing Colorado Mesa, who has 23 points.
Wrestlers will hit the mat in Chaifetz Arena at 10 a.m. to find out where they will stand on the All-American podium. Lindenwood will be wrapping up another successful wrestling season tomorrow.
