Lions Sweep Saturday's Action As Pitching Staff Shines

The Lindenwood baseball team rode the coattails of the pitching staff on Saturday with a 3-2 extra-inning victory in game one and a 7-2 win in game two over Central Oklahoma.

The Lions bounced back on Saturday with a huge game one to start the day.  Both teams had solid pitching in a low scoring ballgame including Central Oklahoma's pitching staff striking out 13 Lindenwood batters.  The Lions were able to score the first runs of the game in the fourth inning.  Mike Ehrhard has found his stroke as he hit his second home run in as many days to lead off the inning.  After Drew Quinones walked, Ryan Light hit a double to left field which allowed Quinones to score after an error by the left fielder and the Lions held a 2-0 lead.  Central Oklahoma tied things up in the fifth with two runs of its own as the Lions and Bronchos were tied after five innings.

Lindenwood had a stellar performance from the bullpen in support of Austin Klein who threw just 4 1/3 innings but only allowed two runs in the process.  Connor Law was first out of the pen for the Lions and struck out an astonishing seven Broncho batters in just 2 2/3 innings of work.  Devin Breihan followed with three solid innings of his own as he pitched through the 10th inning.

In the top of the 11th inning the Lions finally broke the tie with a single by Wes Degener through the left side of the infield that scored Light.  With Breihan set up for his first win of the year, Wade Rothermich struck out two batters in the final inning to earn his second save of the season and help the Lions to a 3-2 victory in game one.

The Lions looked to take the series lead in game two as they responded to a 1-0 deficit heading into the top of the third inning.  Zac Perkins and Degener hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 1-1.  Rothermich helped Lindenwood take the lead in the fourth as he led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Bibbs.  The Perkins and Degener combo continued to generate runs in the fifth as Perkins hit a triple to right center and Degener singled through the left side to drive in Perkins.  Degener scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Rothermich giving the Lions a 4-1 lead.  Brendan Kleekamp had a great outing allowing just two runs on five hits and struck out four Broncho batters.

Vince Saladino added a run for the Lions in the sixth as he hit a solo blast to left field for his first as a Lindenwood Lion.  Degener was seeing the ball well through the seventh as he hit a double to left field and was driven in by a Nathan Prindle double.  Rothermich drove in Prindle with a single up the middle to give the Lions a 7-1 lead heading into the final half inning.  Kleekamp allowed his second run of the game in the bottom of the inning but his strong performance earned himself and the Lions a 7-2 win.

With the doubleheader sweep the Lions improve to 10-14 on the year and 4-7 in league play.  Lindenwood will wrap up the four-game series with Central Oklahoma on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Edmond, Okla. as Lions look to win their first MIAA series on the year.
