Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With No. 21 Washburn

The Lindenwood baseball team split its doubleheader with Washburn on Saturday as they fell in game one 3-1 but defeated the Ichabods 8-3 in game two.

Game one was a pitchers dual that featured a great performance by senior Austin Klein.  Klein was perfect through three innings as he struck out the first three batters of the game.  The Lions saw seven strong innings from Klein with six strikeouts and just one run allowed before he was relieved by Devin Breihan.

Lindenwood scored its first run in the first inning on a Mike Ehrhard single that drove in Wade Rothermich from second base.  The Lions surrendered a run in the sixth inning as the game went into extra innings tied at 1-1.  The Ichabods broke the tie in the top of the 12th inning with a two-run homerun and held a 3-1 lead.  The Lions could did not score another run and fell 3-1 in the 12th inning.

In game two the Ichabods jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning and the Lions responded in the second.  Ryan Light drew a walk and moved to third on a Michael Bibbs double to right field.  Both runners scored on a hard hit single up the middle by Mike Wilson to give the Lions the lead.  Paul Sherwood was successful on the hit-and-run that moved Wilson to third.  Wes Degener reached on a fielder's choice as Wilson was thrown out at home.  The Lions loaded the bases after a Nathan Prindle single and two runs scored on a Rothermich doubled extending the Lindenwood lead to 4-1 after two innings.

Washburn slowly cut into the Lindenwood lead by scoring one run in the third and another in the fifth to make it a 4-3 game.  Prindle led off the bottom of the fifth with a hard hit double off the leftfield wall and moved to third base on a Rothermich single.  After an Ichabod pitching change Drew Quinones belted a three-run homerun over the right field wall to put the Lions up 7-3 after five innings of play.

Brendan Kleekamp worked his way through a rough start and held the Ichabods to three runs on five hits and four strikeouts in his six innings of work.  The Lions added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a Prindle single that scored Wilson.  Brennan Hehner shut down Washburn in the seventh to help seal the 8-3 Lindenwood victory in game two.

The split places Lindenwood at 13-15 on the year and 7-8 in the MIAA.  The Lions will complete their four-game series with Washburn on Sunday at 12 p.m. for a single game at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
