Lions Score in Bunches to Sweep Lincoln

The Lindenwood baseball team swept Lincoln on Tuesday by scores of 17-2 in game one and 12-8 in game two.

The Lions had a noisy day at the plate and they began to make their presence known in the first inning of game one.  Wes Degener and Wade Rothermich reached base to start the game and just like that Drew Quinones put the Lions up 3-0 with a three-run homerun to center field.  Ryan Light hit a double later in the inning to drive in Mike Ehrhard.  Mike Wilson drove in Michael Bibbs and Light on a double of his own and Wilson later scored on a Paul Sherwood single.  The Lions held a 7-0 lead after the first inning of play.

Quinones hit his second homerun is as many at-bats in the game to lead off the second.  Ehrhard followed up with a blast over the centerfield wall to extend the Lindenwood lead to nine runs.  Lincoln put up one run in the bottom of the second but the Lions piled on more runs in fifth inning.

Wilson hit another double to bring in Light and later crossed the plate on a Sherwood double.  Zac Perkins scored on a sacrifice fly by Degener and Ehrhard hit his second home run of the game and his brought in two teammates in the process.  With a 15-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh the Lions added two more runs on a Vince Saladino double to give the Lions a 17-2 victory over the Blue Tigers.  Will Spitzfaden earned his third win of the year by going five innings and allowed just four hits.  Ehrhard made his first appearance on the mound tossing two scoreless innings.

The Lions continued to pile on runs and it started again in the first inning.  Ehrhard doubled down the right field line to bring in Quinones and give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.  After the Blue Tigers scored a run of their own, Rothermich put the Lions back out in front with an RBI single that scored Degener.

Lindenwood decided to pull away in the top of the third with a big inning.  With bases loaded and one out, Perkins hit a double down the left field line that allowed Wilson and Light to score.  Saladino scored on a Sherwood groundout and Perkins crossed the plate on a Degener single.  Rothermich drove in Degener on a single and then scored on a Quinones single to put the Lions up 8-1.

Quinones added a run for the Lions in the top of the fifth but the Blue Tigers scored two runs to pull within six.  The Lions kept putting on runs and scored two more in the sixth on a Sherwood double to centerfield.  Lincoln scored one in the bottom of the sixth and put up four runs in the seventh, but it was too much Lindenwood offense in game two.  The Lions held on to win 12-8 as the pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts in the second game.  Lindenwood scored 29 runs on 30 hits including nine doubles, one triple, and four homeruns.

The weekday sweep will put the Lions at 15-16 on the year and 7-9 in the MIAA.  The Lions have a quick turnaround as they travel to Maryville, Mo. for a four-game MIAA series against Northwest Missouri State starting on Thursday at 2 p.m.
