Men’s Lacrosse Improves to 6-1 with 15-14 Overtime Victory of Lenoir-Rhyne

Lindenwood's men's lacrosse team came away with a 15-14 overtime victory in Hickory, N.C. against Lenoir-Rhyne University on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves Lindenwood's record to an impressive 6-1. The Lions had outstanding performances from Josh Coons, who scored five goals, Graeme Hossack, who brought in 13 groundballs, and Tyler Schermann, the winner of 24 out of the 33 total face-offs.

In the first quarter, Lindenwood gave up two early goals to put themselves in a tough position. The Lions answered back with a Josh Coons goal, followed by a Joe Roy goal. Both teams would score once more before the time in the first quarter expired.

Jon George scored one of his three goals to kick off the second quarter, giving Lindenwood a 4-3 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne answered back, but Josh Coons scored his second goal of the game. Coon's goal would be Lindenwood's last of the quarter, but Lenoir-Rhyne would score four consecutive, sending the Lions into halftime down 7-5.

Whatever Coach Lange said at halftime, it appeared to have worked. Coons came out scoring his third goal of the game quickly. Brandon Lenz, George, McNein Hewitt, and Coons would all score before Lenoir-Rhyne could get a goal in the third period. Kevin Eskridge would score his second goal of the game to put Lindenwood up 11-9. Lenoir-Rhyne snuck one goal in at 00:09 to make the score 11-10 going into the final quarter.

Coons and David Corazalla led off the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals, putting Lindenwood in the driver's seat with a 13-10 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne answered back with three consecutive goals to tie the game at 13-13. Michael Proskey picked a great time to score his first goal of the year, when he put Lindenwood back on top with 5:36 remaining. Lenoir-Rhyne continued to fight, sneaking in a goal with 00:43 remaining, forcing overtime.

George capitalized in overtime, scoring his third goal of the game to give the Lindenwood Lions their sixth victory of the season.

Lindenwood outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 39-35, and won the shots on goal battle as well, 25-24. Lindenwood controlled the loose balls with a 33-22 margin in favor of the Lions. Schermann put on a face-off clinic winning 24 of the 33 face-off opportunities. Goalie Ben Besancenez stayed busy, giving Lindenwood 10 saves in the game, his second highest total of the season.

The Lions are staying busy on Spring Break, as they head to Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C. for one last away game before they come home to play conference opponent Ohio Valley University on April 4th.
