Men's Ice Hockey-ACHA

Season Ends for Lions in ACHA Quarterfinals

Arizona State scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back in a 5-2 win over Lindenwood in the quarterfinals of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division I National Championship Sunday afternoon at the OBM Arena in Strongsville, Ohio.  The loss eliminated the Lions and ended their season.

After a scoreless first five minutes in the opening period, the Sun Devils scored two goals in a span of 100 seconds, then tacked on a third tally on the power play after a Lindenwood boarding penalty.  The Lions broke the shutout late in the first when Mitch Riese set up Kevin Walters at the 18:40 mark.

Arizona State extended its lead to 4-1 when Connor Schmidt broke loose for an unassisted score at 5:02 in the second.  Lindenwood stayed alive in the game with a man-advantage goal late in the period.  Peppi Sipila and Stephen Bopp set up Tobias Nasgarde at 16:42, but that would prove to be the last gasp for the Lions.  The Sun Devils clamped down on defense, only allowing four Lindenwood shots in the final period, and put the game away with a power play goal with 1:45 remaining in regulation.

One of the big stories was the number of times the Lions had to play short-handed.  Arizona State scored two times on seven power play chances while Lindenwood scored once on just two opportunities.  The Sun Devils held a 34-22 lead in shots and Michael Hails saved 29 of the 34 pucks he faced to pick up the loss between the pipes for the Lions, who ended the year with an overall record of 17-15-2, a definite improvement over the 13-20-2 effort last season.  It was the final game in a Lindenwood uniform for seniors Peppi Sipila and Rock Einersen.

In the 12 year history for the program, Lindenwood has compiled an overall record of 326-114-12; back-to-back national championships in 2009 and 2010; runner-up finishes in 2008, 2011, and 2013; and semifinal appearances in 2006 and 2012.
