The Lady Lions opened its 2015-16 campaign with a 6-3 victory over Truman State on Wednesday afternoon.
Anna Barbasheva and
Alexis McCarthy, both freshmen, iced an 8-0 victory at no. 2 doubles to begin the match. Veteran
Daria Ivanova and debuting Lion, Rebeca Aguilar, followed up with an 8-5 win at no. 3 doubles.
Diana Castro and
Gloria Marras almost sealed the doubles sweep at no. 1 doubles, but they fell 9-8.
Barbasheva picked up where she left off from doubles and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at no. 1 singles. Ivanova, McCarthy, and Aguilar posted straight-set wins at no. 4, 5, and 6 singles respectively.
After a dominating display at the Art Peterson Invitational last weekend, the men's team shut out the Bulldogs 9-0 without dropping a set.
The tandem of
Johannes Rabenhorst and
Filip Bogic picked up their fourth win of the season with an 8-4 victory at no. 1 doubles.
Theo Butaeye and
Naoufal El Idrissi edged out their opponents 8-5 at no. 2 doubles. At no. 3 doubles,
Anvar Akhmetov and
Slobodan Bavrlic also earned their fourth victory of the season as they defeated their opponents 8-4.
The Lions kept its foot on the pedal through singles. Notably, Rabenhorst remained undefeated in both singles and doubles after winning 6-0, 7-5 at no. 4 singles. Butaeye, freshman, continued his undefeated singles streak with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at no. 3 singles.
The Lions tennis teams will travel together to Lawrence and Topeka, Kan. to compete in the Baker Invitational this weekend.
