The No. 7 ranked Lindenwood men's soccer team suffered their first defeat of the season on Friday night, 2-1 at the hands of the Christian Brothers Buccaneers from Hunter Stadium.
In the early stages of the game, both teams exchanged shots and scoring opportunities with little results. However, in the match's 29th minute
Nijaz Muratovic broke the scoring ice, giving the Lions an early 1-0 advantage.
Steven Hutchison assisted on Muratovic's first goal of the season, moving him into the team lead in points with seven. Just before the end of the first-half, the Buccaneers tied the score at one goal apiece. Carlos Meza Amador used his head to redirect a pass from Brendan Bennett for the score, sending the teams into halftime deadlocked, 1-1. For much of the second-half, the contest seemed destined for overtime. However, a late Christian Brothers goal in the 83rd minute sent the Buccaneers ahead. Samuel Wilson's team-leading third goal of the season proved to be the difference maker as the Buccaneers held the 2-1 lead until the games final whistle. In net for the Lions,
Andrew Hamerlinck turned away three of the five shots he faced.
In the end, the Lions held the advantage in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (3-2). The Buccaneers led the match in shots on goal (5-4).
The Lions will return to action on September 16th when they welcome the Maryville Saints to Hunter Stadium for a non-conference matchup at 7 pm.
