Both men's and women's tennis traveled to Kansas for an invitational hosted by Baker University this past weekend. The men competed in Lawrence while the women played in Topeka.
On the women's side, the Lions participated in four singles and three doubles flights consisting of NCAA Division II players from Washburn, Rockhurst, Missouri Western, and Emporia State and NAIA players from Baker, Missouri Valley, Stephens, Evangel, William Woods, Graceland, Hastings, Bethany, and Ottawa.
Gloria Marras and
Anna Barbasheva competed in singles Flight A. Marras won her first round then lost to the eventual champion from Emporia State in three sets. Barbasheva lost first round to Washburn, but reeled off three wins in a row to capture the consolation bracket.
Daria Ivanova won her first match before losing in the second round to Emporia State in Flight B.
Alexis McCarthy dominated in the first round with a 6-0, 6-2 rout against Baker in Flight C. During the second round, McCarthy took the first set, but fell short 10-5 in a super tiebreaker against Emporia State.
Rebeca Aguilar defeated Baker 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before falling to Washburn in Flight D.
On the men's side, the Lions competed in four singles and three doubles flights.
Naoufal Il Idrissi lost to the eventual champion from Washburn in Flight A. Il Idrissi won two matches in the consolation.
Filip Bogic lost to the eventual runner-up from Rockhurst and also won two matches in the consolation.
Theo Butaeye lost to Graceland, won a consolation match, and lost to Bogic. Il Idrissi and Bogic elected to not play each other in the consolation final.
Johannes Rabenhorst lost to the eventual runner-up from Washburn in Flight B, but reeled off three wins to take the consolation title. Rabenhorst now owns a 7-1 record in singles this fall.
In Flight E,
Brock Dillon barely edged out Hastings in a super tiebreaker before falling to Emporia State.
Rabenhorst and Bogic paired up in Flight A doubles. They lost to the eventual champion from Washburn first round and won a consolation match against Missouri Valley.
Il Idrissi and Butaeye put on the highlight of the weekend as they won Flight B doubles, defeating teams from Hastings, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, and Rockhurst. The duo have won seven matches in a row.
Dillon and
Adrian Beloqui posted a second place finish in Flight C. They defeated teams from Ottawa, Baker, and Washburn before falling to Hastings 9-7 in the final.
Both men's and women's tennis will host their first home match against Quincy on Saturday at noon.
