Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Downs Lady Lions

Lindenwood's women's soccer team was unable to bounce back from a tough loss less than 48 hours ago, as the Lady Lions fell at Missouri Western 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

Missouri Western set the fast pace early on by launching three shots and being whistled for offsides four times in the first twenty minutes of action. The Griffons broke through in the 35th minute when Taylor Gant sprinted through a gap in the Lindenwood defense to trickle the ball just past Lady Lions' goalie, Jordon Gnolfo. Fending off Missouri Western's continued attacks, Lindenwood began one of its own by getting off five shots and getting an opportunity at a corner. Finding a break in the defense, Lindenwood's Jackie Lindner played the ball into the box to find the foot of senior Danielle Torry, who scored her first goal of the season to tie the match at one apiece.

The Griffons didn't slow down once the second half began, firing three shots in the first fifteen minutes. After each team exchanged opportunities, Sydney Cluck found Bailey Dervin, who slipped the ball into the bottom corner to give Missouri Western a 2-1 lead. Each team had three more shots in the last 10 minutes of the half, but neither team capitalized on the chances before the final whistle blew, signaling the Missouri Western defeat of Lindenwood 2-1.

The Griffons put eight of its 17 shots on goal, and were called for offsides 12 times while only receiving one corner kick. Lindenwood fired 14 shots, but only three found their way to the goal. The Lady Lions only had one corner kick.

Per new MIAA rules, today's match between conference opponents does not count toward the conference standings. Lindenwood drops to 1-2-2, as Missouri Western is off to its best start in program history moving to 4-1. The Lady Lions welcome Washburn on Friday at Hunter Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
