The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated 4-1 on Sunday afternoon by the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
After competing in a thrilling overtime game yesterday, both teams engaged in first period on Sunday that saw a small number of shots and an even fewer number of scoring opportunities. As a result, the first period ended tied, 0-0.
The Bulldogs would strike first, early in the second period as Lara Stalder provided a goal for the 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, with the Lady Lions on the power play,
Britannia Gillanders ripped a shot past the Minnesota Duluth goaltender into the upper-right corner of the net, tying the game 1-1.
Shara Jasper and
Ally Larson were credited with the assists on the power play goal. At the 9:15 mark of the second period Michela Cava scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal, putting Minnesota Duluth ahead by a score of 2-1.
The third period saw several shots on both ends of the ice, however both goals scored during that time would be by the Bulldogs. Minnesota Duluth added a pair of goals to their lead at the 6:11 and 13:27 marks or the period, respectively. The Lady Lions fired 13 shots on goal during the third period, while the Bulldogs sent 23 of their own towards the net.
In goal for Lindenwood, making her first-career start was freshman goaltender
Jolene deBruyn. deBruyn registered 43 saves while allowing the four goals against. Between the pipes for Minnesota Duluth for the second-consecutive game was Kayla Black, who turned aside 23 shots while allowing one goal.
For the second-consecutive game Lindenwood celebrated a career milestone, as senior forward
Rachel Weich played in her 100th game as a Lady Lion.
With the loss, the Lady Lions see their season record move to 0-2-0. Lindenwood will return to action on Friday night as they play host to non-conference opponent, Ohio State University from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzille, Mo. The Lady Lions and Buckeyes will play a two-game set on Friday and Saturday with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. on both nights.
