#7 Men’s Soccer Rallies For Thrilling OT Tie

The Lindenwood men's soccer team tied Rockhurst University 5-5 in their home-opening match on Tuesday night from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions overcame a four-goal deficit with just over 17 minutes to play to force the tie.

The Lions dug themselves an early hole, trailing 2-0 at the 8:50 mark of the first-half. Lindenwood began chipping away in the 18th minute as Alfredo Paez beat two defenders from the left side of the field and scored his first goal of the season.

However, the Hawks began the second half with a goal off of a rebound from the right post in the 52nd minute. Six minutes later, the Lions surrendered another goal from a shot outside the top right of the box, making the score 4-1. The Hawks tallied their fifth goal with 70:16 remaining in the match. However, the Lions roared back with two goals from Thomas Hutcheson and Fernando Cordero in just under a minute. Kyle Weinrich had the assist on Hutcheson's score, while Nijaz Muratovic assisted on Cordero's goal. In the 81st minute, Paez scored his second goal of the game, when he received a feed from Muratovic to cut the lead to 5-4. With just six minutes left in regulation, Gabriel Jaimes scored the game-tying goal, ripping a shot through traffic to even the game up at 5-5. Muratovic earned his third assist of the game and fifth of the season. In net for the Lions, Andrew Hamerlinck saved five of the ten shots he faced, including two critical attempts in the first overtime period.

In the end, the Lions totaled 18 shots while the Hawks fired 16. Both teams recorded a total of ten shots on goal. Rockhurst held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-6.

The Lions will return to action when they face Christian Brothers at Hunter Stadium on Friday at 8:30 pm.
