Late Third Period Goal Defeats Women's Hockey

The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated by the Mercyhurst Lakers 2-1 on Friday evening from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
 
Both teams opened the first period of play with a cautious approach as neither team registered any significant scoring opportunities. The Lady Lions ended the period with the edge in shots 10-8, as both teams headed into the locker room with the score even at zero.
 
The second period saw a carry over from the first period of action, as neither team was able to breakthrough with the game's first goal. The Lakers received two power-play chances during the period, while the Lady Lions received one. After two periods of play the shot total was in favor of Mercyhurst 17-15, with the scoreboard reading 0-0.  
 
The Lady Lions and Lakers skated even for the opening 19:01 of the third period until a Mercyhurst power-play goal gave the Lakers a 1-0 edge with under one minute remaining in regulation. The eventual game-winning goal was scored by Sarah Robello, her fifth goal of the season. The Lakers would light the lamp once more before the games end, scoring an empty-net goal with nine seconds remaining in the game. The empty-net tally was recorded by Jaclyn Arbour, her second goal of the year.
 
The Lady Lions were led offensively in shots by Shara Jasper's total of six, narrowly edging out Shannon Morris-Reade's total of five. Lindenwood and Mercyhurst finished the game tied in shots with 25 each. In goal for the Lady Lions, Nicole Hensley turned-in a 23 save performance while allowing the one goal against.  On special teams, the Lindenwood power-play went 0-4, while the penalty-kill unit wrapped up play killing off three of the four penalties against.
 
With the loss the Lady Lions move their season record to 5-16-4 and 2-5-4 from within the CHA. Following the victory, the Lakers improve their season record to 11-8-4 and 8-1-2 in conference play. The two teams will return to action from the Lindenwood Ice Arena tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
