The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team defeated the top-ranked team in the CHA, the Mercyhurst Lakers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
The Lady Lions tallied the first goal of the game at the 4:44 mark of the opening period as
Shara Jasper notched her team-leading 16th goal of the season, providing Lindenwood with a 1-0 edge. Assisting on Jasper's score were her linemates
Sarah Bobrowski and
Shannon Morris-Reade, their 13th and 12th helpers of the season, respectively. Lindenwood would carry the 1-0 lead into the first period intermission after outshooting the Lakers 10-4 for the period.
The Lakers controlled the puck for the majority of the second-period, registering the first nine shots on goal, and holding the Lady Lions without a shot for the opening 9:54 of second-period action. Mercyhurst would outshoot Lindenwood 19-6 during the period, however, Lady Lion goaltender
Nicole Hensley was up for the challenge, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of Lindenwood after two periods of play.
During the third-period of play, Mercyhurst would again control the puck for the majority of play, outshooting Lindenwood by a total of 12-3. However just as in the previous period, Hensley could not be beat, finishing the game with 35 saves. For just the third time during her tenure as a Lady Lion,
Nicole Hensley picked up a shutout victory. In the process, Hensley tied the all-time NCAA career saves record with a mark of 3,809.
For the game, the Lakers would outshoot the Lady Lions 35-19.
Tirra Lemoine and
Tae Otte tied for the team lead in shots with four apiece. Lindenwood narrowly held the advantage in the faceoff circle, winning 26 of the 51 draws. On special teams, the Lindenwood power-play unit failed to convert on any of its four opportunities, while the penalty-kill unit killed-off all four of its attempts.
Following the victory, the Lady Lions see their record improve to 6-16-4 and 3-5-4 during conference play. With the loss, the Lakers improve/move their season record to 11-9-4 and 8-2-2 from within the CHA. Lindenwood will return to action on Friday evening when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a two-game series with CHA opponent, the Robert Morris Colonials. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 ET on Friday, and 3:05 ET on Saturday afternoon.
