The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the Robert Morris Colonials 5-2 on Friday evening from the 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsbugh, Pa.
Early into the first-period, Lindenwood goaltender
Nicole Hensley reached a historic milestone with her first save of the game. For Hensley the save represented her 3,810th career save, an NCAA record. Shortly thereafter at the 10:49 mark of the period, the Lady Lions would jump ahead to a 1-0 lead on the strength of a
Britannia Gillanders goal. For Gillanders, the goal was her eighth of the season, which ranks second on the team. Assisting on Gillanders' score were
Shara Jasper and
Carla Goodwin. Just 2:41 after gaining the 1-0 advantage,
Shannon Morris-Reade would light the lamp while on the power-play, extending the Lindenwood lead to 2-0.
Ally Larson and Goodwin were credited with the assists on the goal, their ninth and fifth assists of the season. Sarah Quaranta would cut the Robert Morris deficit in half, while on the power-play with 3:21 remaining in the opening period. The score would remain 2-1 heading into the locker rooms.
The Colonials' Kristen Welsh brought the score even at 2-2 just 1:16 into the second-period, with her fifth goal of the season. Robert Morris would gain its first lead of the night with 3:36 left in the second-period as Maeve Garvey notched her fourth goal of the season. The second-period would end with the score 3-2 in favor of the Colonials.
Robert Morris would score twice more during the final period, bringing the score to the final of 5-2. The Colonials' fifth goal of the evening came with the Lindenwood net empty in favor of an extra attacker.
Hensley finished the game with 26 saves between the pipes for the Lady Lions, while allowing four goals against. Robert Morris held the edge in shots 31-22.
Sarah Bobrowski led the way for Lindenwood in the shot category with six. On special teams the Lady Lion power-play was 1-4, while the penalty-kill unit successfully killed-off three of its four opportunities.
Following the loss, the Lady Lions see their season record move to 6-17-4 and 3-6-4 in conference play. With the win, the Colonials improve their season record to 13-9-5 and 5-4-4 within the CHA. The two teams will return to the 84 Lumber Arena ice tomorrow afternoon at 3:05 p.m. eastern time to complete their two-game series.
