Women's Hockey Drops Non-Conference Matchup at No. 6 Bemidji State

The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to No. 6 Bemidji State 2-1 on Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup from the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
 
The Lady Lions were on the defense early and often throughout the first period, as Lindenwood goaltender Jolene deBruyn faced 16 shots during the opening period, turning all 16 aside. The Lady Lions were whistled for three penalties during the first period, which were all successfully handled by the penalty-kill unit. By the end of the first period the shots favored the Beavers by a total of 16-4, with the scoreboard reading 0-0.
 
The two teams continued their stalemate deep into the second period with each team searching for the first goal of the game. At the 13:45 mark of the second period, the Beavers broke through with the elusive first goal of the game. Kristen Huber was credited with the unassisted Bemidji State score. Just 2:08 after the Beavers goal, the Lady Lions responded with a goal of their own, evening the score at 1-1. Shannon Morris-Reade picked up the goal, her sixth of the season, and extended her point streak to three consecutive games. Holly Dietzler was credited with the assist on the Morris-Reade goal, her first helper of the season. Lindenwood and Bemidji State headed to the second period intermission with the score even 1-1.
 
The Beavers scored 48 seconds into the third period, as Stephanie Anderson notched her sixth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with Huber. The Lady Lions would have a few opportunities over the remaining 19 minutes, but were unable to even the score as Bemidji State prevailed by a final score of 2-1.
 
In goal for Lindenwood, deBruyn shined in her first start since Nov. 22 at No. 1 Wisconsin, making 32 saves while allowing the two goals against. Tirra Lemoine paced the Lady Lions with five shots on goal. Bemidji State held the edge in shots 34-20. On special teams, the Lady Lions and Beavers each went 0-3 on their power play attempts.
 
With the loss the Lady Lions move their season record to 5-14-4. Following the victory, the No. 6 ranked Beavers improve their season record to 14-5-2. Lindenwood and Bemidji State will return to the Sanford Center ice tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. to conclude their two-game series.
