Gillanders Records Three Points in Loss at No. 6 Bemidji State

The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated by No. 6 Bemidji State, 5-3 on Thursday evening in a non-conference matchup from the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
 
The Lady Lions wasted little time gaining the early 1-0 advantage during the first period on Thursday night, as Carla Goodwin notched her third goal of the season just 36 seconds into the game. Britannia Gillanders was credited with the lone assist on the play. Lindenwood would strike again at the 2:50 mark of the period on the strength of a Holly Dietzler score, her second goal on the season. Gillanders and Goodwin picked up the helpers on the Dietzler goal. Bemidji State would respond with three goals of their own before the end of the period, scoring at 10:48, 11:57, and 17:06. The Beavers would carry a 3-2 edge with them into the first period intermission. 

Bemidji State grew its lead to 4-2 behind a power play goal 2:10 into the second period. The Lady Lions power play unit would respond with a goal 56 seconds later, scored by Emily Gunderson, trimming the Beavers lead to 4-3. For Gunderson, the goal was her third of the season and her second power play goal this year. Gillanders notched her third assist of the game, which was good enough for a career-high, while Ally Larson also got on the score sheet with an assist. Bemidji State would light the lamp once more during the period at the 10:54 mark, expanding their lead to 5-3 by periods end. 

The Lady Lions managed to kill off both penalties against them during the third period, however, that was the lone bright spot over the 20 minute stretch for the team, as they were unable to score and fell by a final of 5-3. In goal for the Lady Lions, Nicole Hensley made a season-high 53 saves while allowing the five goals against. 

For the game, Bemidji State held the advantage in shots 58-18. Shara Jasper paced Lindenwood in the shot category, sending a total of four pucks on net. On special teams, Lindenwood scored on their only power play attempt, while the penalty-kill unit finished the game 2-3. 
 
With the loss, the Lady Lions move their season record to 5-15-4. Following the win, the No. 6 ranked Beavers improve their season record to 15-5-2. The Lady Lions will return to action on Jan. 22-23 for a two game series with CHA opponent, Mercyhurst Lakers. The Lakers currently hold a record of 9-7-4 and rank first within
