Welsh and Girard Score at No. 2 Minnesota

The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the No. 2 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers by a score of 6-2 on Saturday afternoon from Minneapolis, Minn. The game concluded a two-game non-conference series played at Ridder Arena.

The Golden Gophers struck first, scoring 5:32 into the first period, building a 1-0 lead.

Just over five minutes later, Lindenwood evened the score, as Corbin Welsh found the back of the net. Welsh's goal came unassisted, and was the first goal of her collegiate career.
The two teams skated even for the remainder of the period, which ended with the score 1-1.

Minnesota scored twice to open the second period, opening up a two goal lead. Lindsay Agnew and Megan Wolfe tallied the Golden Gopher scores.

Lindenwood would cut into the Minnesota lead at the 8:33 mark of the second period, bringing the score to 3-2. Taylor Girard notched her first goal as a Lady Lion, while Carrie Atkinson and Kirsten Martin were credited with the assists. For Martin, the helper was her first collegiate point.

The second period would come to a close with the score in favor of Minnesota 3-2.

The Golden Gophers would score three times during the final period, extending their lead to its final margin of 6-2.

Morgan Skinner made the start in goal for Lindenwood, her first career start. Skinner turned in 26 saves during the game, including a game-high 11 saves in the second period.
Sarah Bobrowski tallied a team-leading three shots on goal. Martin won a team-high six faceoffs.

On special teams, the Lady Lion power-play unit was unable to score on any of its three opportunities, while sending two shots on goal. The Lindenwood penalty-kill team finished the game killing off three of its four chances.

When speaking after the game, Lindenwood head coach Scott Spencer said, "We are happy as a whole with our performance today. We competed, created more scoring chances, but we ran out of gas at the end. We will learn a lot from this weekend and keep working at it. We are excited to open up at home next weekend with a strong Northeastern team."

Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 0-2-0 this season. After the victory, Minnesota improves its record to 2-0-0. The Lady Lions will return to action on Oct. 7-8 for a two-game series with the Northeastern Huskies at the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on both nights.
