Women’s Hockey Drops Home Opener to Northeastern

The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the Northeastern Huskies by a final score of 5-0 from the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

Just 43 seconds into the first period, Northeastern went to the power play as Lindenwood's Taylor Girard was whistled off for a checking minor. The Huskies wasted little time converting the opportunity, as Hayley Scamurra scored 17 seconds into the power play.

The game would remain 1-0 in favor of the Huskies for the majority of the period as the teams continued to exchange opportunities on both ends of the ice. The Lady Lions saw their best chance midway through the period while on the power play when Carrie Atkinson rang a shot off of the right post.

Lindenwood went to the power play late in the period as Northeastern took a checking penalty. While on the power play, the Huskies Denisa Krizova intercepted a pass across the Northeastern blueline and skated the length of the ice, depositing the puck between the legs of Lindenwood goaltender Jolene deBruyn.

The shorthanded goal helped Northeastern grow its lead to 2-0, a lead which they would carry into the first intermission.
The second period began evenly, with each team registering shots early. At the 10:02 mark of the period, Northeastern's Krizova notched her second goal of the evening, putting the Huskies ahead by a score of 3-0.

Northeastern struck twice more during the final period, including one power-play goal. Matti Hartman and Paige Savage were credited with the goals for the Huskies, who won by a final score of 5-0.

deBruyn turned in 29 saves during her second start of the season in goal for the Lady Lions.

Atkinson and Shannon Morris-Reade each tallied a team-high three shots on goal for Lindenwood. In all six Lady Lions recorded shots during the game.
In the end, Northeastern outshoot Lindenwood 34-10.

The Lady Lion power-play unit failed to score on any of their four opportunities, while the Lindenwood penalty-kill unit managed to kill off five of its seven chances.

Following the non-conference loss, Lindenwood moves its season record to 0-3-0. With the victory, Northeastern improves its record to 1-2-0. The two teams will return to the Lindenwood Ice Arena to conclude the two game series tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m.
