A goal in the 82nd minute haunted the Lindenwood women's soccer team on Friday night, as the Lady Lions fell to Washburn, 1-0, in Topeka, Kan.
Each team only managed a couple chances in the early going before Lindenwood attacked after 30 minutes of play. After
Kat Roe had her shot attempt blocked,
Jackie Lindner and
Autumn Olendorff put shots on goal, but the Washburn goalkeeper saved both. The Ichabods received the final real opportunity of the half a few minutes later, but the Lindenwood defense blocked the shot attempt. At the half, the score read 0-0 with the Lady Lions holding the edge in total shots, 5-3.
After Washburn put a shot on goal in the first couple minutes, the Lady Lions possessed the ball the majority of the time thereafter. Roe and Lindner were able to get another shot, while
Becky Roberts and
Alyssa Houck joined the shot column despite not putting it past the host goalie. Before the 80th minute, each team exchanged substitutions and fouls before the Ichabods took advantage of an opportunity to score late.
Washburn received a corner kick and Kate Combs knocked it past
Mary McGilvray to give the hosts the lead. Roe had two more shots after, along with
Alexis Robbers heading one wide on a corner kick, but the Lady Lions failed to even the score before the final whistle blew.
In total, Lindenwood out shot the Ichabods, 15-6, including seven on goal. McGilvray lowered her goals against average to 1.44 and save percentage to .726 despite taking another loss.
The Lady Lions dropped to 5-6-1, and have played a one-goal-or-less match in all but one contest this season. Lindenwood will look to break the three-match losing streak on Sunday when it goes to Emporia State for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
