First-Half Goal By Lindner Proves To Be The Difference In 1-0 Win At Emporia State

The Lindenwood women's soccer team snapped its losing streak on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 win at Emporia State after a first-half goal by Jackie Lindner proved to be the difference maker.

The Lady Lions received the first chances of the match. After about 12 minutes of no action, Alexis Robbers sent a header shot high, and then Becky Roberts had a shot attempt blocked 37 seconds later.

Lindner quickly moved past the defense in the 14th minute on a breakaway pass from Kat Roe and gave Lindenwood the early led. A little more than two minutes later, Lindner put another shot on goal, but this time the Emporia State keeper was there to turn it away.

Lindenwood remained in control with another shot on goal, this time by Roberts, but it was saved. The Hornets went down the field for their first opportunity of the match in the 20th minute, but a header chance by McKenzie Koch went wide.

The Lady Lions possessed most of the half, as Alyssa Houck also put a shot on goal, but the score would hold at 1-0 after 45 minutes.

Emporia State made up for its lack of attack in the opening half, by launching shot after shot in the final 45 minutes. The Lindenwood defense continued to get in the way of the Hornets' shots as hardly any made it to keeper Lauren Greenstein.

Emporia State's best chance came with 20 minutes left when the hosts managed to get an open shot, but sailed high before receiving a corner kick with an opportunity for the equalizer. The freshman keeper then made a couple saves and forced a wide header a few minutes later to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Lindenwood.

After Lindner had another shot blocked late in the half, the Hornets stormed down the field and received a corner kick, but the defense held strong again as the final whistle blew.

The total team effort today made head coach Laurie Kaminski proud as the three-match losing streak was snapped with the win. "Today's win was the result of high-quality effort, teamwork, and heart in the tough road conditions," Kaminski said after the match.

Greenstein made three saves, while facing 14 total shots. Lindner led with four shots, while Roe  had three. Defenseman Brittany Steiger also put a shot on goal.

The Lady Lions improve to 6-6-1 with the win, and capture the much-needed three points to go to 3-4 in the MIAA and move into a tie for seventh place in the conference standings.

"This was an important win in the surge towards the playoffs," Kaminski added.

Lindenwood will come back home Friday as it plays host to Southwest Baptist for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
