Field Hockey Cruises Past Molloy with 4-0 Shutout

The Lindenwood field hockey team showed no mercy on Saturday against Molloy as the Lady Lions posted their fifth shutout victory of the season with a final score of 4-0.

Rebounding off the fast-paced overtime contest against No. 9 Adelphi on Friday, the Lady Lions felt extra loose on a one-day rest, and it showed on offense during the first half. In fact, the Lady Lions recorded 32 total shots in just the first half, which is more than any full game played this season. Although they converted only two goals, the Lady Lions also registered a season-high with 14 shots-on-goal in one half. More impressively, Molloy could not contain the non-stop heavy pressure from the Lady Lion offense close to the goal which awarded the Lady Lions 13 total corner attempts.

After the Lady Lions shot five times from four different players, Chloe Bell tallied their first goal of the game at the 8:23 mark when she picked up the loose ball near the right corner and launched straight at the back of the goal for her second score of the season. She also initiated four corner attempts before the goal.

The Lady Lions continued to apply pressure on the offensive side of the ball, not allowing any wiggle room for the opposing Lions to carry the ball on their side of the field. Victoria Buysschaert saw a good amount of playing time in which she shot twice. Nicole Johnston, Megan Pranger, Noor Fons, Amelia Rodriguez, and Tara Robben all recorded multiple shots throughout the half.

After a plethora of attempts, Tara Robben came through with her 14th goal of the season after Buysschaert dished a pass for the easy score at the 25:35 mark. In the winding minutes of the half, Rodriguez garnered four corners that led to shots from the sticks of Buysschaert, Caro Theunisz, and Madie Shetter. Also after not allowing a single shot, the Lady Lions led the opposing Lions by a score of 2-0 heading into the half.

Coach Sarah Johnson mixed up her starting lineup for the second half in which she inserted a rare combination of Bridget Hoogendijk, Shelby Easley, Maroussia Buysschaert, and Mackenzie Litterst in goalie. Within the first eight minutes of the half, Savannah Motley shot twice while Johnston shot three times until the Lady Lions made more substitutions at the 43:40 mark. Jessie Londono entered the game for V. Buysschaert in which she took full advantage of the playing time.

Londono belted a shot from the right outside past the defender and through the goalie to score her second goal of the season and third of the day for the Lady Lions at the 54:50 mark.

Kaitlin MacLennan also received a chance to show off her talents when she entered the game at the 49:46 mark. She registered a shot-on-goal that nearly slipped by the goalie and another shot blocked by a Lion defender.

Finally, Megan Martin left her imprint on the game after she scored her first goal in her career at the 65:05 mark to give her team a 4-0 lead. The opposing Lions finally earned a chance on offense in the remaining minutes, but shot just once that went wide at the 67:05 mark.

The Lady Lions dominated in every offensive facet as they outshot the Lions by a 45-1 margin and received a season-tying-high 23 corner attempts to the Lions' zero. Johnston and Theunisz led the Lady Lions with seven total shots each while Motley, V. Buysschaert, and Karlie Quinn each had five.

After the victory, the Lady Lions improve their record to 9-3 overall as they will visit ECAC-rival Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Monday, October 17. The game will start at noon CT.
