The Lindenwood women's hockey team defeated the Minnesota Whitecaps in a shootout 2-1 on Saturday afternoon from the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. The game was the first of a two-game exhibition series between the two teams.
The Lady Lions would strike first, scoring the opening goal at the 5:43 mark of the period.
Kirsten Martin was credited with the unassisted score, as she slid the puck through the Whitecap goaltender's five-hole.
Lindenwood would hold its one-goal lead for the remainder of the first period.
Jolene deBruyn sparkled in net, turning away several chances for the Whitecaps throughout the opening 20 minutes. deBruyn finished the period with 15 saves, as the Lady Lions headed into the first intermission with the 1-0 lead.
The Whitecaps evened the score at 1-1 just 56 seconds into the second period. Hannah Brandt ripped a wrist shot over the left shoulder of deBruyn for the equalizing score. Brook Garzone and Kendell Coyne had the assists on Brandt's goal.
The teams skated even for the remainder of the second period, as deBruyn continued her dazzling play in goal. deBruyn turned in 14 saves in the second period, bringing her total to 29 saves through two periods.
Lindenwood and the Whitecaps continued to trade chances on both ends of the ice during the third period. The Whitecaps had their best chance of the game with under 20 seconds remaining when Coyne had a breakaway opportunity stopped by deBruyn, sending the game to overtime.
The five minute overtime period did not produce a goal and the teams headed to a shootout.
Coyne scored on the second attempt for the Whitecaps, giving them an early edge in the contest. However, Lindenwood responded with goals from
Cierra Paisley and
Sarah Bobrowski to take a 2-1 lead in the shootout. deBruyn made the final save of the shootout, sending the Lady Lions to a victory.
deBruyn ended the game with 38 saves.
Britannia Gillanders had a team-high four saves.
On special teams, the Lindenwood penalty-kill unit successfully killed off all three of its opportunities. The power-play unit failed to convert on either of its two chances.
The Whitecaps outshot the Lady Lions by a total of 39-20.
Lindenwood and the Minnesota Whitecaps will return to the Lindenwood Ice Arena to conclude their two-game exhibition series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
