The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the Minnesota Whitecaps 4-3 in an exhibition game played at Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
For the second-consecutive game,
Kirsten Martin scored the first goal of the afternoon, giving Lindenwood an early 1-0 lead. Martin snapped a wrist shot over the right shoulder of the Whitecaps goaltender, for her second goal in as many days.
Britannia Gillanders and
Carla Goodwin picked up the assists on the play.
Sarah McGall started in goal for the Lady Lions, turning in six saves during the opening period. McGall helped Lindenwood carry a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, after the team outshot the Whitecaps by a total of 12-6.
The Whitecaps evened the score at one goal apiece 3:41 into the second period, as Meaghan Pezon notched the equalizing score.
With 10:55 remaining in the second period,
Morgan Skinner relieved McGall in net for the Lady Lions.
The Whitecaps would pull ahead shortly after, as Brook Garzone scored following a scramble inside the crease at the 11:40 mark of the second period.
Just 50 seconds after the Whitecap goal,
Cierra Paisley roofed a backhand shot just under the crossbar, bringing the score even at two goals a side. Assisting on Paisley's goal were
Sarah Bobrowski and
Tae Otte.
With 1:02 remaining in the second period, the Whitecap's Haylea Schmid fired a shot from center-ice that took an odd bounce in front of Skinner and into the back of the net. The goal sent the Whitecaps ahead by a score of 3-2 at the end of two periods.
Early in the third period Paisley again lit the lamp for Lindenwood, putting home a rebound opportunity, and bringing the score to 3-3. Bobrowski and
Taylor Girard notched the assists on the Paisley's second goal of the afternoon.
However nearly 10 minutes after Paisley's equalizing goal, the Whitecaps scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Haylea Schmid fired a shot from close range into the back of the net, giving the Whitecaps a 4-3 advantage.
Despite several quality chances at the end of the game for the Lady Lions, they were unable to tie the score.
In goal for Lindenwood, McGall made 11 saves while Skinner turned in 15.
Girard registered a team-high 15 shots on goal, while 14 Lady Lions had at least one shot. The Lady Lions outshot the Whitecaps 35-30.
Paisley was a dominant force in the faceoff circle for Lindenwood, winning 12 of her 15 draws. Lindenwood won 27 of the 47 faceoffs for the game.
The Lady Lions failed to score on their only power play in the first period, while holding the Whitecaps scoreless on both of their power-play attempts.
Lindenwood will return to action on Oct. 28-29 in Syracuse, N.Y. for a two-game CHA series with the Syracuse Orange. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT on October 28, and 2:00 p.m. CT on October 29.
