Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Walks Off in Overtime With Last-Second Goal

The Lindenwood women's soccer team won 2-1 in dramatic fashion when they scored the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in overtime over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday.

During the first half, both teams earned a couple opportunities to score, but failed to convert on any. Audrey Barrera of the Lopers received a pass at the mid-20 yard line and shot the ball right at Mary McGilvray for the save at the 18:57 mark.  The Lady Lions got a free attempt that was passed to Alyssa Houck. Houck attempted to head the shot, but went wide right out of bounds at the 26:25 mark.

Five minutes later, the Lopers saw another open chance to score as Maddie Love drove the ball from the left wing and shot towards the right side of the goal, but McGilvray jumped and batted the ball upright out of bounds. After that, each team battled for possession of the ball without many whistles blown until the 41:09 mark when Kristen Brewer stopped an attacker wide left by sliding and kicking the ball away.

The Lopers continue to apply pressure with another shot  two minutes later from the 25-yard line, but the ball went straight to McGilvray's hands. Skylar Taylor of the Lopers tried one last time to score before the half, but Houck stole the ball at fives yard from the goal at the 43:55 mark. As both teams gathered for halftime, the score remained 0-0.

Both teams struggled to produce any chances on offense for nearly the first 20 minutes of the second half until Autumn Olendorff skipped around her defender on the left wing to find an open chance to shoot from 25 yards away. The Lopers' goalie Emily Thuss dove to catch the ball on the right side of the goal, but bobbled it right to Houck who shot high into the net for the score at the 64:44 mark. Olendorff was accredited with the assist on the play.

Six minutes later, Kat Roe nearly pulled off the play of the game when she dribbled around one defender on the deep right wing then a split second later juked a second defender to find an opening for a score. However, Roe shot just inches away from the left goal post.

The Lopers gathered momentum at the 74-minute mark when they shot twice on goal within a 10 second span with the second shot batted away towards the 25-yard line. Kelsie Ienn brought the ball to the 35-yard line and blasted a long kick that sailed over McGilvray's head for the unusual score to even the game at one goal apiece.

With just 12 minutes remaining, Houck attempted another shot that was saved on the left side of the goal post. That would be the last attempted shot near a goal post for the rest of regulation.

The trend continued into overtime of both teams failing to get near each other's goal for an easy opportunity to put the game away. However, the Lopers committed a foul to set up a free possession from the 40-yard line with 15 seconds left. Tayler Heinemeier took the shot and bolted just past the 10-yard line to Houck who headed the shot towards the left side of the goal. The ball went past the goalie into the net for game-sealing goal.

Overall, the Lady Lions played efficiently when the Lopers controlled the ball, allowing 13 shots with just six being on-goal. Each team only registered two corner kicks for the entire game including none in overtime.

After the victory, the Lady Lions improve to 5-3-1 and 2-1-0 in the MIAA while the Lopers fall to 3-6-1 and 0-3-0 in conference play. The Lady Lions will hit the road on Friday, October 7 to take on Northeastern State at 7 pm for another MIAA-matchup.
