Game Recap: Field Hockey (Discontinued) |

Field Hockey Shuts Out Its Seventh Opponent of the Season

The Lindenwood field hockey team registered its seventh shutout of the season after handling Concordia (Wis.) by a final score of 4-0. The Lady Lions also extended their winning streak to five games.

Looking to carry their offensive momentum over from the 6-1 win over Newberry on Sunday, the Lady Lions persistently unleashed shots everywhere throughout the first half. The Falcons broke the ice with a shot going wide at the 3:53 mark, but that would be the lone shot they took for the entire game. The Lady Lions recorded 17 total shots with seven being on-goal in the first half from 11 different players. Jessie Londono got the nod to start at midfield and made the most out of her chance, shooting twice with one nearly slipping by the Falcons' goalie Kennedy Boyer at the 9:52 mark. Savannah Motley also started at midfield and batted the ball towards the goal that was saved by defender Sophia Kottmer at the 9:41 mark.

Although the Lady Lions dictated possession of the ball for the entirety of the half, they had trouble getting past Boyer until the 22:37 mark. Tara Robben guided the ball towards the middle of the Lady Lions' offensive side of the field to line her up with a straight on shot at the goal. She launched a rocket of a shot towards the left side of the goal, and the ball glided past Boyer for the score and a 1-0 lead for Lindenwood. Robben attempted a second shot four minutes later that Boyer managed to stop.

Greta Banholzer joined the offensive fray and shot twice after Robben's goal, but one traveled wide left and the other was denied by Boyer. Victoria Buysschaert and Noor Fons each tried to shoot as well, but the Falcon defense continued to impress with their resilience inside the circle. The Lady Lions headed into halftime with a 1-0 edge and eight corners to the Falcons' zero.

After the break, the Lady Lions sprinted out of the gate and put the Falcon defense right back to work. Four different Lady Lions took a shot each in which three sailed wide and the other was saved by Kottmer again. However, Robben capitalized on the Lady Lions' aggressive offensive attack when she scooped a shot from the left post at the 40:20 mark for her second goal of the game and her astonishing 17th of the season.

During the next 18 minutes, the Lady Lions relentlessly took shot after shot after shot, attempting 13 daggers which seven were on goal. They also garnered six corner chances within that time frame.

Finally, after Chloe Bell belted a shot from 15 yards out that bounced off Boyer, Fons retrieved the ball then tapped it behind Boyer for her fifth goal of the season and a 3-0 advantage for the Lady Lions. That goal also placed Fons on top of the Lady Lions freshmen for most goals on the year.

Neither team gained definitive possession of the ball for the next 10 minutes until Nicole Johnston subbed in at goalie for Skylar Starbeck at the 65:22 mark so the Lady Lions can have an extra player on offense. As a result, the Lady Lions began to once again take shots at Boyer. Robben had a shot blocked then Karlie Quinn barely missed sliding the ball past Boyer. However, Shelby Easley, who initiated the bulk of the Lady Lions' corners, earned herself a goal at the 68:17 mark to seal the deal for the Lady Lions.

Lindenwood registered 40 total shots for the game which marked as the second time to shoot that many times in a game this season. The Lady Lions collected 15 corners while the Falcons failed to obtain one. After another impressive performance, Robben becomes the second Lady Lion in school history to earn 40 points in a season, trailing Kristi O'Connor's record 49 set in 2013.

The Lady Lions improved their overall record 13-3 after the victory. They will host Senior Day on Saturday at 3:30 from Hunter Stadium when they square off with ECAC-rival Bellarmine.
