The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the Syracuse Orange by a score of 4-0 from the Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y. The game was the first CHA contest of the season for Lindenwood.
After skating even through the majority of the first period, Syracuse would break through with the first goal of the afternoon late in the opening frame. With 15:29 gone by in the period, Heather Schwarz netted her first goal of the season, sending the Orange ahead by one goal. Syracuse outshot Lindenwood 14-7 over the first 20 minutes, and carried the one-goal lead into the first intermission.
Syracuse would score twice more in the middle period, as it extended its lead to a three-goal margin. The Orange goals were scored by Savannah Rennie and Brook Avery. After two periods of play, Syracuse held its 3-0 lead.
The Orange would score once more during the final period, on their way to the eventual 4-0 victory. Alysha Burriss registered the fourth goal of the afternoon for Syracuse at the 10:47 mark of the third period.
Jolene deBruyn made the start in goal for Lindenwood, her third of the season. deBruyn turned in 33 saves, including a game-high 13 saves during the first period.
Taylor Girard sent a team-high four shots on goal in the game, while
Sarah Bobrowski,
Emma Hare, and
Shannon Morris-Reade each recorded three shots on net.
Kirsten Martin won six of her 11 draws to lead the way for the Lady Lions in the faceoff circle.
Tae Otte led Lindenwood with two blocked shots. Five other Lady Lions blocked at least one shot in the game.
On special teams, the Lady Lion power-play unit finished the game 0-3, while the penalty-kill unit successfully killed off all three of its chances.
Syracuse outshot Lindenwood 37-22 for the game.
With the loss, Lindenwood moves to 0-5-0 and 0-1-0 on the season. Following the victory, Syracuse improves to 1-4-2 and 1-0-0. The Lady Lions and Orange will return to Tennity Ice Pavilion tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. CT to conclude their two-game series.
