Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Martin Scores Power-Play Goal in Loss to Northeastern

The Lindenwood women's hockey team dropped the final game of its two-game series with the Northeastern Huskies by a score of 4-1 on Saturday evening from the Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.

For the second-consecutive night, the Huskies struck first, scoring at the 3:04 mark of the first period. Matti Hartman was credited with the goal, which gave Northeastern a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Lions went to the power play shortly after the Northeastern score, but were unable to convert on the opportunity.

The Huskies extended their lead to two goals at the 13:53 mark of the period following a Heather Mottau score. Northeastern headed into the first intermission with the 2-0 lead.

Early in the second period, Northeastern was called for too many skaters on the ice penalty, sending Lindenwood to the power play. With just 23 seconds remaining on the advantage, Kirsten Martin fired a shot from the blue line past the glove of the Northeastern goaltender for a power-play goal. Assisting on the Martin score were Britannia Gillanders and Cierra Paisley.

For Martin and Paisley the points were their first of their Lady Lion careers. Gillander's helper was her first point of the season.

Northeastern would light the lamp twice more over the final 5:55 of the second period, growing its lead to 4-1 heading into the final period of play.

Each team had several chances throughout the final period, however, neither team managed to score as the game ended with a final score of 4-1.

Morgan Skinner made her second-career start in goal for Lindenwood. Skinner turned in a career-high 32 saves, including 24 over the final two periods of action.

Sarah Bobrowski tallied a team-leading seven shots, while 12 Lady Lions recorded at least one shot on goal.

For the game, Northeastern outshot Lindenwood 36-28.

On special teams, the Lady Lion power play converted on one of its four opportunities, while the penalty-kill unit successfully killed off its only chance in the second period.

Following the non-conference loss, Lindenwood moves its record to 0-4-0 to open the 2016-17 season. With the victory, Northeastern improves its record to 2-2-0. The Lady Lions will return to action on Oct. 15-16 for a two-game exhibition series against the Minnesota Whitecaps. Both games will be played at the Lindenwood Ice Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Oct. 15 and 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 16.
