Two-Goal Lead Slips Away for Women’s Hockey

The Lindenwood women's hockey fell to Penn State by a score of 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. The game was the first of a two-game CHA series to be played between the teams this weekend.

With 8:35 gone by in the opening period, Lindenwood would break through with the first goal of the game and build itself a 1-0 lead. Britannia Gillanders registered her first goal of the season, while Ally Larson and Carla Goodwin each picked up their first assists of the season.

Jolene deBruyn would stop all 12 shots sent her way during the first period, sending the Lady Lions into the first intermission with a one-goal advantage.

Midway through the middle period, Lindenwood would extend its lead to two goals while on the power play. Kirsten Martin netted her team-leading second goal of the season, and also her second power-play goal of the season. Cierra Paisley and Goodwin were credited with the assists on the play.

Penn State would respond quickly, scoring two goals before the end of the second period to even the game at 2-2. The Nittany Lions received even-strength goals from Meike Meilleur and Katie McMillan.

Penn State would score a power-play goal at the 6:08 mark of the third period to pull ahead by a score of 3-2. Despite firing 10 shots on goal during the final frame, Lindenwood was unable to pull even with Penn State, and ultimately fell by the final score of 3-2.

deBruyn started her sixth game of the season for the Lady Lions, stopping 19 of the 22 shots she faced.

Shannon Morris-Reade totaled a team-high four shots on goal, with all four coming in the third period.

Penn State outshot Lindenwood 22-20 for the game.

The Nittany Lions held the edge in the faceoff circle, winning 23 of the 35 draws. Gillanders won a team-high four faceoffs for Lindenwood.

On special teams, the Lady Lion power-play unit finished the game one-for-two. Lindenwood penalty-kill unit managed to kill off two of its three chances.

Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 0-9-0 and 0-3-0 in conference action. With the victory, Penn State improves to 5-6-2 and 4-1-0 from within the CHA. The two teams will conclude their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET from Pegula Ice Arena.
